Realizing the Saudi vision: leveraging China’s economic prowess and Hong Kong’s capital market expertise

China has not been a business destination for us but over the past years, especially since the visit of the Chinese president to Riyadh, a new era has been paved between the two countries and new historic milestones have been concluded in different sectors.Last week, the Public Investment Fund signed six memorandums of understanding worth up to $50 billion with leading financial institutions: the Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, China Construction Bank, China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation, the Export-Import Bank of China, and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. The PIF aims to strengthen relationships with leading financial institutions and accentuate PIF’s commitment to enhancing partnerships globally.China is still Saudi Arabia’s largest trading partner, constituting more than 18 percent of Saudi Arabia’s total exports where bilateral trade between the two economies is more than $80 billion, not to mention that Saudi Arabia has traditionally been China’s top oil supplier. We at BMG Financial Group had our share of dealing with the Chinese in the semiconductor sector where we arranged for an agreement signing between King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology and State Grid Corporation of China. The Saudi and Chinese parties have been exploring ways of mutually developing electronic chip design, manufacturing, and application in power digitalization and smart cities.China is still Saudi Arabia’s largest trading partner, constituting more than 18 percent of Saudi Arabia’s total exports.Furthermore, BMG participated in the capital market forum in Hong Kong organized by Tadawul last May. Since that forum, Chinese and Saudi stock exchanges have been in talks to allow exchange-traded funds to list on each other’s bourses as the countries look to deepen financial ties amid warming diplomatic relations. For China, an “ETF connect tie-up with Saudi Arabia will be a gateway to open its trillions of dollars” worth of financial markets to international investors. The cross-listing of ETFs will allow investors in China and Saudi Arabia to trade funds tracking specific stocks or bond indexes listed on each other’s stock exchanges.Given that the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US one and the interest rate differential between that of HKD and USD is treading lower for the former, Saudi companies will find raising debt financing in HKD cost-efficient as they tap into a larger source of liquidity. Furthermore, Saudi companies and government-related entities like the PIF by issuing sukuk in Hong Kong’s debt capital market can help realize the aspiration of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to add more depth and breadth to Hong Kong’s debt capital markets and strengthen Hong Kong’s position as the fund-raising hub for East Asia.In my opinion, the PIF and other major Saudi institutions can kick-start the development of a nascent sukuk issuance market in Hong Kong’s debt capital markets which are dominated by large capitalized corporate conglomerates.Basil M.K. A dream come true: a polo club in Diriyah

It was music to my ears to read the official announcement that Diriyah Co. has signed a $2 billion contract with Urbacon Saudi Co. and Al-Bawani Group to develop the Wadi Safar project, including the Royal Diriyah Equestrian and Polo Club, a golf course, and several luxury hotels. This piece of news took me back almost 20 years, to when I met Prince Nawaf bin Faisal, the former president of the General Presidency of Youth Welfare, to lobby for the creation of a world-standard polo club in Saudi Arabia. Back then, our BMG Foundation had been hosting the GCC Polo Cup for five years and made headlines, especially after organizing a polo cup in honor of King Salman, who was visiting the UK at the time, where he presented the cup to King Charles, then prince of Wales, who was captain of the UK team against the Saudi team. Years later, during the early days of King Abdullah Economic City, there were several discussions with the management of KAEC, followed by meetings between Fahd Al-Rasheed, the former KAEC CEO, and the Guards Polo Club CEO, the late Charlie Stisted, to set up a polo field next to the golf course there. Unfortunately, Stisted lost his life in a helicopter accident, and discussions were put on hold. For someone who has been organizing high-profile polo cups between the two kingdoms for over a quarter of a century, this announcement is a dream come true. I cannot wait to enjoy the first polo match played there. Having this polo field within a magnificent landscape and with views of Diriyah, the UNESCO World Heritage site, reminds me of the Royal Guards Polo Club, which is in the backyard of Windsor Castle. I had the pleasure of visiting DGDA several times and meeting its CEO, Jerry Inzerillo. As one of the most important giga projects, Inzerillo was a keynote speaker for two years in a row at our annual BMG Economic Forum at the London Stock Exchange. In my opinion, a project of this size and value, $2 billion, will create the most spectacular world polo field and club. In addition to the equestrian and polo club, Wadi Safar will include a Greg Norman-designed 27-hole golf course and 10 spectacular resorts. As for premier hotel brands, confirmed operators include Aman, Oberoi, Faena, and Chedi. With its historical legacy coupled with this unique world-class giant project, Diriyah is moving at full speed to realize the Saudi vision and will be ready to receive global visitors for Expo 2030 in Riyadh. For someone who has been organizing high-profile polo cups between the two kingdoms for over a quarter of a century, this announcement is a dream come true. I cannot wait to enjoy the first polo match played there.Basil M.K. Al-Ghalayini is the chairman and CEO of BMG Financial Group.

Quantum leap by Saudia Group to enhance Hajj and Umrah mobility services

Earlier this year, Saudia Hajj and Umrah, a subsidiary of the holding company, obtained a license from the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to serve pilgrims. The group aligns with the Kingdom's commitment to enhancing the pilgrimage experience in all aspects, including transportation. Last week, Saudia Group and Lilium N.V., a leading electric-aircraft manufacturer and pioneer in Regional Air Mobility, signed an agreement for 50 Lilium Jets, with options for purchasing a further 50. The contract was signed by Fahad Al-Jarboa, CEO of Saudia Private, and Lilium&rsquo's CEO, Klaus Roewe. This was in the presence of Ibrahim Al-Omar, director-general of Saudia Group, Michael Kindsgrab, the German ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and Lilium Chairman Tom Enders. The sale agreement, which follows the memorandum of understanding between Saudia Group and Lilium signed in October 2022, marks the largest of its kind in the Middle East North Africa region. It also represents an important industry milestone as the largest reported order of eVTOL aircraft by an airline. The group is aligning with the Kingdom's commitment to enhance the pilgrimage experience in all aspects, including transportation. Al-Omar confirmed that Saudia Group would acquire all-electric eVTOL jets. This reflects the national carrier’s commitment to continuously reduce its carbon footprint and become an industry leader in regional electric aviation. Besides the Hajj and Umrah seasons, Saudia Group plans to operate the all-electric aircraft on regional point-to-point air services, and in its hub airports for tourist flights associated with sporting and entertainment events, operating on routes of up to 175 km. As part of its mission, Saudia Hajj and Umrah aims to deliver high-quality services to pilgrims. This includes offering packages that cover flight bookings at both domestic and international airports, accommodation, transportation between cities, and organizing visits to historical Islamic sites. The development of Hajj and Umrah services for pilgrims and visitors in the Kingdom is expected to continue unabated. It is among the top priorities of the government’s vision for the sector. Saudia Group&apos's order of these electric flying taxis is a testimony to a quantum leap step in the mobility and logistics arena to provide further high-quality services with comfort for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.Basil M.K. BMG Economic Forum 2024: Another voice to promote Saudi investments

Last Wednesday, BMG Financial Group hosted the 17th edition of its economic forum with the theme “Why Saudi Arabia? Why now?” at the London Stock Exchange, to introduce investment opportunities in Saudi Arabia, with the participation of global investment bankers, CEOs, leaders of companies listed in London and Riyadh, and owners of family businesses.

The forum covered the investment prospects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that are attracting investors from around the globe.

Several important topics were discussed, such as regional and global geopolitical developments, giga-project updates, the evolution of the healthcare and AI sectors, the transformation of the Hajj and Umrah companies coupled with their listing on the Saudi stock market, and the benefits of dual listing in Riyadh and London.

On the giga-projects topic, Jerry Inzerillo, CEO of the Diriyah Gate Development Authority, delivered an overview via video of progress to date, with the completed 9 km of parks, the 42 new hotels, including the first, which will open its doors next September, and the Diriyah Futures Museum, one of nine, which will also open to the public this year.

The main faculty of speakers included Tom Attenborough, Manish Singh, Usama Kurdi, Ali Alireza, Ibrahim Al-Moajel, Abdalla Kablan, Carole Nakhle, Ahmed Sindi, Mohammad Merah, Abi Ajaya, Arsalan Karim, John Yip, Muddassar Ahmed and other leading business leaders.

We are living in an unprecedented dynamic era in Saudi Arabia.

As for choosing the City of London, it has been viewed as the world’s central hub for business gatherings and meetings, while the London Stock Exchange is the world’s oldest and is known to be a platform to launch and promote global investments. Furthermore, the forum is part of the so-called BMG summer retreat, which includes the BMG Foundation events including the GCC polo cups and the classical music concerts.

One of the important topics discussed during the forum was the transformation of the Hajj and Umrah sector including preparations for companies’ initial public offerings on the Saudi stock markets. This transformation will enhance these companies’ sustainability, corporate governance, transparency and wealth preservation for future generations of stakeholders.

In my opinion, we are living in an unprecedented dynamic era in Saudi Arabia. An era of great opportunities that are sustainable, unique, and promising over the medium and long-term horizons. I believe that the London Stock Exchange is an excellent platform to introduce these opportunities and that the BMG Economic Forum is becoming another heard voice to promote these opportunities.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to our partners, including Arab News, Haj Hussain Ali Reza, the exclusive dealer of Aston Martin in Saudi Arabia, Ashraqat, Ithraa Al-Khair, Nusuk and BIM Ventures.

Basil M.K. Al-Ghalayini is the chairman and CEO of BMG Financial Group.

Another year of glory: We are proud of you kids

Nothing is more joyful than celebrating the victory of our youth in international competitions. A few weeks ago, Saudi science and engineering students made headlines worldwide, winning 27 awards at the International Science and Engineering Fair 2024 in Los Angeles, US, with 1,700 participants from 70 countries. The King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundations For Giftedness and Creativity, known as Mawhiba, said that the achievements reflect its cooperation and strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education, enabling students to excel and represent their country on international stages. Winning 27 awards at ISEF 2024 is a culmination of joint efforts. It reaffirms the commitment to achieving the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to build a vibrant society and a thriving economy through enhancing human capabilities, excellence and innovation. The students’ exceptional projects and hard work have brought them to this global stage. This year marks the Kingdom’s 18th consecutive participation in the Regeneron ISEF Fair, beginning in 2007 as part of an annual program organized by Mawhiba in partnership with the Ministry of Education. Reflecting on last year, Mohammed Al-Arfaj and Faisal Al-Muhaish achieved first place in two distinct fields in the ISEF 2023 competition. In the environmental engineering category, Al-Arfaj won for his distinguished project “Using a contact liquid to capture carbon dioxide by freezing from fuel and open-air sources with high efficiency and low cost.” In addition, Al-Mahish, a chemistry student, places first for his outstanding project, “An Electrocatalyst Based on a Metal-Organic Framework for the Production of Hydrogen from Seawater with High Efficiency and Low Cost.” Last year, the Saudi science and engineering team won 15 grand prizes and six special prizes while participating in the most prominent scientific fair for competition in scientific research at the pre-college level. The team comprises 35 male and female students from 11 educational administrations from different regions in Saudi Arabia. They competed with about 1,800 international students from 80 countries, and they returned crowned with titles and adorned with medals of excellence and merit among their peers. Mawhiba has been part of the Vision 2030 strategy which aims to attract, develop and empower talents and leaders. It seeks to create an attractive work culture and a supportive work environment, enhance levels of productivity and innovation, and support the private sector by developing human capabilities. I look forward to seeing my daughters, Salma and Alma, joining Mawhiba and celebrating their victories in future ISEF events. Congratulations kids, you make your parents and all of us proud.Basil M.K. Al-Ghalayini is the chairman and CEO of BMG Financial Group.

And here comes the enhanced spiritual journey of Hajj

With its latest overhaul, the Hajj and Umrah sector is becoming a key economic driver and significant cornerstone of non-oil activity. The continual development of Hajj and Umrah organizations and services is an unstoppable mission and among the top priorities of the Saudi government’s vision. It is worth noting that the new focus of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is mainly to enhance the competitiveness of licensed companies and ensure adherence to the highest degree of corporate governance and transparency. This in turn will achieve the government’s goal of raising the quality of services offered to pilgrims, including housing, logistics services, healthcare, transportation, subsistence, water and energy solutions. The continual development of Hajj and Umrah organizations and services in the Kingdom is among the top priorities of the Saudi government. This important target requires owners and managers of Hajj and Umrah services companies to undertake practical financial and corporate actions, including listing, mergers, acquisitions and restructuring to create sustainable and profitable performance. The Saudi capital market is becoming one of the most advanced globally, with incentives for family businesses, including Hajj and Umrah services shareholders, to plan to monetize their shares by listing their companies on the stock market. The continual development of Hajj and Umrah organizations and services in the Kingdom is among the top priorities of the Saudi government. These days, there are many educational sessions and workshops aimed at educating shareholders of these companies on the benefits and advantages of going public. At BMG, we are hosting our economic forum on July 3 at the London Stock Exchange, where we will dedicate a full panel to preparing Hajj and Umrah companies for IPOs.The panel, titled “Vision and Ventures: Pioneering Economic Growth in Pilgrimage Services,” will feature chairmen and senior executives of these companies, including Dr. Ahmad Sindi, chairman of the Company of Mutawifs for Pilgrims from African Non-Arab Countries, Rakan Azhar, chairman of Rawaf Mina, Mohammed Maageni, chairman of Ashraqat Tawafi Co. for Pilgrims of Arab Countries.Panel topics will include enhancing the pilgrimage experience, innovative approaches to infrastructure development in pilgrimage areas and sustainable practices in managing large-scale pilgrimages. As we witness global visitors embarking on their spiritual journey to perform Hajj in the coming weeks, the Hajj and Umrah companies are dedicated to exerting endless efforts to enhance this spiritual journey and make it a memorable experience for a lifetime.Basil M.K. Saudi economy to record second-highest global growth rate in 2025

One of the most important indicators for foreign direct investors is the growth rate of the economy. Saudi Arabia has maintained its status within the G20 club.Despite geopolitical developments in the region and worldwide, the International Monetary Fund has increased its growth forecast for Saudi Arabia’s economy by 0.5 percent, to 6 percent for 2025, up from the 5.5 percent predicted in January. For some time we at BMG have highlighted that Saudi Arabia, India, and Indonesia enjoy the highest economic growth rates among the G20 economies. The latest IMF forecast indicates that the Saudi economy is expected to record the second-highest growth rate in 2025, following the Indian economy, which is projected to achieve a growth rate of 6.5 percent. It is worth noting that the IMF has raised its forecast for the Saudi economy’s growth rate for 2025 for the second time this year. In its World Economic Outlook report released this month, the IMF indicated that the baseline forecast for the global economy is 3.2 percent growth for 2024 and 2025, maintaining the same pace as in 2023. The report pointed out that the global recovery is steady but slow and varies by region.Despite geopolitical developments in the region and worldwide, the International Monetary Fund has increased its growth forecast for Saudi Arabia’s economy by 0.5 percent, to 6 percent for 2025, up from the 5.5 percent predicted in January. In a related matter, the Kingdom’s National Competitiveness Center and the World Bank Group recently announced in Washington their intention to establish a knowledge center in Saudi Arabia, as part of their efforts to promote the culture of economic reforms globally.World Bank Group officials emphasized that this decision confirms the significant progress made by Saudi Arabia in global competitiveness reports and indicators, which has resulted from the economic reforms implemented with the support and directives of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The announcement ceremony was attended by Majid Al-Qasabi, Saudi minister of commerce and chairman of the National Competitiveness Center; Princess Reema bint Bandar, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the US; and Ajay Banga, president of the World Bank Group.During the 16th BMG Financial Group’s Economic Forum on July 3 at the London Stock Exchange, we will host a special panel discussing the IMF’s latest forecast and hear from global and Saudi economists sharing their views in line with the forum’s theme: Why Saudi and Why Now?Basil M.K. Unprecedented growth in asset management business in Saudi market

Just before the Eid break, the Saudi Capital Market Authority disclosed statistics that are considered unprecedented in the assets management business in the Saudi market. The values of locally managed assets increased from $134 billion in 2019 to $232 billion in 2023, representing a rise of 74.2 percent. As for the revenues, they have reached circa $1.12 billion, representing a rise of 58.6 percent since 2019.Abdullah Mohammed Binghannam, CMA deputy of financing and investment, highlighted that the sector is one of the most important sources of institutional investments, contributing to providing diversified products and professional management of client resources. As for the number of funds in the Saudi market, it reached 1,285 by the end of 2023, signifying a surge of 111.7 percent compared to 2019. Additionally, the number of subscribers to investment pools jumped to a historic high of more than 1.17 million by the end of 2023, compared to 334,200 in 2019.It is worth noting that during the Future Investment Initiative Forum last October, the Public Investment Fund and the CMA introduced two new initiatives: the Managers’ Gate platform and the Portfolio Management Development Program. The Capital Market Authority is dedicated to developing various components that will make Saudi Arabia an investment-friendly destination, increasing the efficiency of the Kingdom’s capital market, and enhancing its competitiveness regionally and internationally. The Managers’ Gate platform aims to promote growth in the asset management ecosystem by exploring potential opportunities and facilitating the PIF’s seamless collaboration with fund managers. The Portfolio Management Development Program aims to provide financial market training of the highest quality to aspiring portfolio managers in the country. The program is dedicated to setting a high standard for portfolio management practices and will play a crucial role in the development and advancement of financial markets in Saudi Arabia. These latest statistics clearly show that the CMA’s efforts are moving in the right direction to achieve the strategic objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. The authority is dedicated to developing various components that will make Saudi Arabia an investment-friendly destination, increasing the efficiency of the Kingdom’s capital market, and enhancing its competitiveness regionally and internationally. As someone who started their career in asset management over 30 years ago, I have witnessed and experienced the evolution of this industry. Al-Mawaddah Society for Family Development: An example to be proud of

The holy month of Ramadan is known as a time for giving and supporting needy families and individuals through charitable contributions and corporate social responsibilities.I was invited to join the honorary board of the Al-Mawaddah Society for Family Development last week. The board is led by Prince Faisal bin Mugrin as its president and Faisal Al-Samanoudi as his deputy, alongside prominent personalities from academia and the private sector.Al-Mawaddah is a nonprofit development association specializing in education, training, guidance, reform, and family awareness through sustainable development initiatives. It aims to stabilize families and build a generation of conscious and cohesive families capable of facing challenges. Additionally, the association seeks to create a healthy and safe environment for children following parental separation, fostering mutual respect.Over the years, Al-Mawaddah has provided guidance and dispute resolution services to 9,779 individuals; around 1,766 families have been reunited with their children; 936 women have been aided through the Life Academy for Women’s Empowerment to economically support their families; 10,176 people have been trained in vocational skills; and 13,699 women and children have been given protection-center care.Nationals and residents from various age groups and all strata of society have begun utilizing the Ehsan platform to support community projects and humanitarian cases by donating through this reliable official channel. It is worth noting that as part of the Saudi Vision 2030 plan aimed at enhancing quality of life, including streamlining charitable contributions in the country, the Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence launched the Ehsan platform a few years ago to support charitable giving in an organized and guaranteed digital system. With the onset of the holy month of Ramadan, the latest national campaign took place, witnessing a broad turnout of beneficiaries receiving donations from individuals, companies, banks, and other donors through the platform’s application. The platform is designed to facilitate the efforts of donors and philanthropists, reduce difficulties associated with bank transfers, and organize payment portals accessible through laptops or even mobile phones.Nationals and residents from various age groups and all strata of society have begun utilizing the Ehsan platform to support community projects and humanitarian cases by donating through this reliable official channel. We at BMG Foundation, since our inception 25 years ago, have been among the pioneering organizations to introduce the term corporate social responsibility, in collaboration with prominent families such as Abdul Latif Jameel, Al-Rajhi, Al-Subaie, Al-Sharbatly, Bin Mahfouz, Al-Jomiah, Al-Fozan, Bahrawi (Widad), Al-Muhaidib, and others who had established in-house charitable organizations and foundations many years ago.Al-Mawaddah stands as a shining example of leadership to be proud of.Basil M.K. Golden opportunities in Saudi Arabia for Turkish construction firms

I recently received an invitation from Badr Al-Badr, the Saudi deputy minister of investment, to join a delegation from the Kingdom on a business fact-finding trip to Georgia and Turkiye.Flying to the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, for the first time was eye-opening and the visit provided a useful insight into the business links and opportunities between Georgia and Saudi Arabia. However, Istanbul was a completely different experience. The Turkish-Saudi Investment and Business Forum held in the city attracted more than 1,000 participants, with senior officials from both countries including the Saudi ministers of investment and tourism, Khalid Al-Falih and Ahmed Al-Khateeb, respectively, the Turkish Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Simsek, and head of the Turkish Investment Office Ahmet Burak Daglioglu. The forum was a follow-up to one staged in Jeddah last year during the state visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A range of topics related to the development of cooperation in the economic, trade, investment, and tourism fields were discussed, and 28 memoranda of understanding were signed covering sectors including construction, real estate, manufacturing, industry, hospitality, vocational training, financial services, logistics, human capital, innovation, tourism, and quality of life.In line with the expanding relationship between the two countries, the Turkish construction and project management sectors have golden opportunities to utilize their extensive capacity where they can be effectively employed to achieve the milestones of the Kingdom’s mega and giga projects, worth around $1.8 trillion. With the active participation of government and private-sector delegations, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye are seeking to bolster economic, tourism, and investment ties. They aim to leverage available opportunities to enhance collaboration across various sectors in both countries. The construction sector dominated forum discussion sessions, and it was noted that Turkish firms could help fill capacity gaps in the Kingdom, especially in infrastructure and privatization projects.BMG Financial Group has been advising the Saudi Baytur Co., a joint venture between leading Saudi contractors and Baytur Insaat Taahhut, on its expansion in the Saudi market, while also inviting value-added strategic partners. In line with the expanding relationship between the two countries, the Turkish construction and project management sectors have golden opportunities to utilize their extensive capacity where they can be effectively employed to achieve the milestones of the Kingdom’s mega and giga projects, worth around $1.8 trillion.I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ministry of Investment for such a comprehensive and educational tour in Tbilisi and Istanbul to explore business opportunities that will help toward achieving the ambitions of our country’s vision.Basil M.K. Will TASI hit fourth spot in list of world’s largest stock exchanges by 2030?

According to the World Federation of Exchanges, by the end of 2023 the Saudi main exchange, Tadawul All Share Index, was ranked 11th among the world’s largest exchanges. The positioning placed Tadawul just below the Canadian TMX Group in 10th place and the London Stock Exchange in ninth. As of the end of last month, TASI has moved up to the eighth position. At the close of 2023, TASI recorded a value of 11,967.39 points, marking a notable increase from the previous year’s 10,478.46 points, representing a gain of 1,488.93 points or 14.21 percent. The highest closing level for TASI in 2023 was 11,967.39 points, as of Dec. 31. The total market capitalization at the conclusion of 2023 reached SR11,259.32 billion ($3,002.49 billion), reflecting a 13.98 percent increase compared to the previous year’s end. The total value of shares traded in 2023 amounted to $355.50 billion, showing a decrease of 21.95 percent compared to the previous year’s figure of $455.48 billion. In my opinion, reaching the world’s fourth place is challenging but achievable by 2030. Considering that market capitalization can fluctuate due to various economic factors, investor sentiment, and company performance, TASI may secure fourth place if it surpasses the market value of the Japanese exchange with a total market value of $6.2 trillion. This is nearly double TASI’s current market cap and four times the number of listed companies.Given the Kingdom’s track record of achieving challenging targets with the motto ‘If there’s a will, there’s a way,’ such as hosting the World Cup and the World Expo, becoming the world’s fourth-largest stock exchange is not far-fetched.With six years remaining until 2030, to achieve the fourth place we must rapidly develop the sovereign wealth fund-owned giga-projects, including Red Sea Global, Diriyah Gate Development Authority, Qiddiya, and numerous sizable privately owned companies for listing. Given the Kingdom’s track record of achieving challenging targets with the motto “If there’s a will, there’s a way,” such as hosting the World Cup and the World Expo, becoming the world’s fourth-largest stock exchange is not far-fetched.It is worth noting that in about two weeks, top financial minds and decision-makers will gather in Riyadh for the third Saudi Capital Market Forum on Feb. 19, with the theme “Power Growth,” to discuss market evolution, investment strategies, and regulatory developments. The forum, which boasts BMG Financial Group as a gold sponsor, will feature keynote speakers, including the Finance Minister and the Financial Sector Development Program Chairman Mohammed Al-Jadaan, Capital Market Authority Chairman Mohammed El-Kuwaiz, Saudi Tadawul Group Chairwoman Sarah Al Suhaimi, and Saudi Tadawul Group CEO Khalid Al-Hussan.Basil M.K. The magic of AlUla attracts the King of Opera

In 1990, a few weeks after landing in London to start my asset management assignment with NCB, now SNB Capital, I went to my first-ever opera concert at Hyde Park performed by the late legend Luciano Pavarotti. Since then, attending opera concerts has become a frequent social outing for me in London and other European capitals.

Years later, under the umbrella of our BMG Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of BMG Financial Group, we launched Foundation Classics, an initiative to organize concerts in the Gulf and Middle Eastern capitals to showcase the beauty of classical music. As we witnessed our region confront the looming threat of being inundated by commercialized music that fails to elevate the tastes and sensibilities of our youth, it became the humble ambition of the BMG Foundation to restore balance and provide an arena for exposure to the wonders and beauty of classical opera.

Another mission of Foundation Classics is to discover and promote the work of exceptionally gifted composers and sopranos from the region, presenting them internationally. One of the talented artists I recently met was Sawsan Al-Bahiti, the first soprano in Saudi Arabia.

At the core of BMG Foundation's exemplary charitable and philanthropic work are its noble sponsors. Over the years, they have fulfilled their corporate social responsibility through the foundation's activities, and without their generous and distinguished contributions, such heights of success would never have been achieved.

Last Friday, I attended a breathtaking musical night starring the King of Opera, Andrea Bocelli, along with other leading artists, including Al-Bahiti, at Maraya Musical Hall in AlUla, one of the most magical cultural sites in Saudi Arabia.

As some of you may know, the maestro legend Bocelli is an Italian opera singer, songwriter, and record producer. He developed a passion for music as a young boy; his mother said music was the only thing that made him happy. He began piano lessons at 6 and later learned to play the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, and drums. He received the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

If you've ever wondered what it's like to experience an adventure through time, marveling at some of the grandest architectural sights that date back more than 200,000 years, then AlUla is a must-visit. With its ancient historic cultural sites, gorgeous oasis valleys, and sandstone mountains, AlUla is truly a testament to human endeavor and natural beauty. Because of AlUla's uniqueness, Bocelli chose to perform a fifth time in the ancient oasis city.

Last Friday’s performance was stunning, combining AlUla’s magical ambiance with Bocelli’s majestic performance.

The freezing snow of Davos will melt in the warmth of Riyadh

I have often been to Davos to attend the World Economic Forum but never experienced such freezing snow weather as this time. Although the outside temperature averaged -6 C, there were heated discussions inside the congress corridors.Among critical and timely topics, geopolitical developments affecting worldwide economies took priority, including the Russian-Ukrainian war and the genocide against civilians in Gaza. Other issues included the threat of climate change to the world’s population and the controversy over the speed of artificial intelligence implementation. The Saudi delegation to Davos, led by Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, participated in several high-level sessions and bilateral meetings. Also, the delegation highlighted the Kingdom's expertise in collaborating with the international community, private sector, non-governmental organizations, and academia. It is worth noting that Saudi Arabia's iconic brands were visible on the Promenade, Davos' main road, including NEOM, SABIC, AlUla, Saudi Digital, Saudi Invest, and Misk's Youth Majlis pavilion. I was pleased to attend several sessions organized by Misk's Youth Majlis, especially the "Meet the Leader" session where my dear friend Prince Mohammed Al-Faisal, chairman of the stc Group, gave the youthful audience, including my son Bader, inspiring words of wisdom. One of the highlights of Davos' evenings was the Saudi Aramco reception. Senior government officials and business leaders usually attend this special event. In his welcoming speech, Amin Al-Nasser, Aramco's CEO, stated that Aramco has allocated an additional $4 billion to its global venture capital arm, Aramco Ventures, more than doubling its allotted capital from $3 billion to $7 billion. The Qatar Investment Authority also hosted a similar reception where government and business leaders were invited. On the final day, Faisal Al-Ibrahim, Saudi minister of economy and planning, and Borge Brende, WEF president, announced that Riyadh would host a high-level WEF special meeting focusing on global cooperation, growth, and energy on April 28-29, 2024. This special session will convene more than 700 global leaders from the public and private sectors, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, academia, and civil society to foster dialogues between countries, revive international cooperation, and address current challenges to growth and development.Being hosted in Riyadh, the capital of the largest economy in the Middle East and a world-leading hub connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe, the WEF special meeting will provide a platform for global leaders to assess current challenges and propose transformative ideas to create a positive global impact. Similar to the one-off snow-free WEF meetings that took place in May 2022, we look forward to the special meetings, which will see Davos' snow melting in the friendly warmth of Riyadh in April.Basil M.K. Is Saudi Arabia becoming a global mining hub?

Last week, I was invited to attend the third Future Minerals Forum, the first major event in the Kingdom in 2024, featuring over 13,000 government and private sector delegates from 145 countries. Since its inception two years ago, the forum has evolved into a global platform shaping the future of minerals by facilitating the creation of sustainable value chains. What garnered significant attention during the forum was the announcement by Bandar Alkhorayef, the minister of industry and mineral resources, that Saudi Arabia has revised upward its estimates for untapped mineral resources to $2.5 trillion from a forecast of $1.3 trillion in 2016. This represents a 90 percent increase, attributed to the discoveries of rare earth elements and transition metals such as phosphate ore, zinc, and gold. Also unveiled at the forum were details of the 33 sites available for exploration this year and the first mining belt to be made available for exploration in the region at Jabal Sayid, encompassing an area of 4,000 sq. km. Furthermore, the Kingdom has established a $182 million mineral exploration incentive program to expand its mining sector and tap into phosphate, gold, copper, and bauxite reserves. This program aims to de-risk investments in exploration, securing new commodities, greenfield projects, and supporting junior miners. It is worth noting that as the world embarks on an ambitious decarbonization journey toward net zero, there are challenges to be faced in supplying the critical minerals required for cleaner energy technologies. With strategic partners worldwide, deals worth $7.2 billion were signed during the forum. The agreements focused on mining exploration, technology, communications, and the implementation of sustainability standards, localization, qualification, and industrialization in the minerals sector. We at BMG Financial Group had our share of discussions with several mineral companies from different countries to raise capital for their global expansion, including setting up joint ventures in the Kingdom. Our advisory mandates will include approaching strategic investors from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries as equity investors and structuring fixed-income notes as sukuk, subject to the Capital Market Authority and other authorities' approvals. One of the core competencies that BMG Financial Group focuses on is advising the mining sector. With $2.5 trillion of untapped mineral resources, Saudi Arabia is undoubtedly becoming the world's most promising future global mining hub.Basil M.K. Endless efforts to enhance the spiritual journey of Hajj and Umrah

As a key economic driver and a significant cornerstone of the non-oil sector, the continual development of Hajj and Umrah organizations and services in the Kingdom is an unstoppable mission and is among the top priorities of the Saudi government's vision.Last week, I received an invitation from my friend Ahmed Sindi, chairman of the Company of Mutawifs for Pilgrimages from African Non-Arab Countries, to attend the third Hajj and Umrah Services Conference and Exhibition 2024 under the patronage of King Salman. The conference, which will be held from Jan. 8 to Jan. 11, is a global platform that brings together all those interested in the Hajj and Umrah services sector, with initiatives, products, innovations, investments in new solutions and technologies to be presented, discussed and reviewed. It is an opportunity to showcase and create partnerships for local entities, Hajj missions from around the world, interested parties and entrepreneurs to build sustainable collaborations that enhance the experience of all pilgrims. The new focus of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is primarily to enhance the competitiveness of companies in the sector and ensure the corporate governance and transparency of centuries-long family-owned businesses. This, in turn, will achieve the government's goals of improving the quality of services offered to pilgrims.Various topics will be presented during this event, including housing, logistics services, health care, transportation, subsistence, technology and artificial intelligence, water and energy solutions, which contribute to developing and raising the level of services provided to pilgrims and Umrah performers. The continual development of Hajj and Umrah organizations and services in the Kingdom is among the top priorities of the Saudi government. This crucial objective, in my opinion, necessitates the owners of Hajj and Umrah services companies to undertake practical financial and corporate actions, including restructuring, mergers, acquisitions and going public, to ensure sustainable performance. The Saudi capital market is becoming one of the most advanced globally, offering incentives for family businesses, including Hajj and Umrah services providers, to plan their public market journey by listing their companies on the stock market. With expected global visitors embarking on their spiritual journey to perform Hajj and Umrah reaching 30 million pilgrims a year by 2030, the Kingdom is committed to extending endless efforts to make this spiritual journey a memorable one for a lifetime.Basil M.K. Another key milestone in the stunning Asir region

The Asir region appears to have more good news to share with us. Last week, the Asir Development Authority launched the second industrial city, covering an estimated area of 17.3 million sq. m.Governor of Asir Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz expressed appreciation for the leadership during the launch ceremony. The second industrial city exemplifies how Saudi Arabia connects development projects to optimize their collective impact. The city seamlessly integrates with the first industrial city in Asir to offer services and products that contribute to enhancing the capabilities of the industrial sector. The two cities create a business model aligning with national ambitions for integration and cooperation between the public and private sectors. They attained their sustainable impact according to a comprehensive vision aimed at activating the developmental role of the industrial sector. Thus, the efforts to build these cities align with Asir's development strategy, which is consistent with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.The Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones, or Modon, is working on the development of a 2 million sq. m area during the first phase of the new city. The city seamlessly integrates with the first industrial city in Asir to offer services and products that contribute to enhancing the capabilities of the industrial sector. This city is located in Al-Hafayer, northwest of Khamis Mushait. It will be linked to multiple road networks that contribute to the quality management of the entire supply chain. This includes providing the project with raw materials and delivering industrial products. The first phase also includes infrastructure development projects, such as road networks and all related utility services. The first industrial city in Asir was established in 1990 in an area spanning 2.7 km2. It comprised 157 industry and service contracts, including construction, manufacturing, printing, vehicles, trailers, machinery, equipment, pharmaceutical products, chemicals and electrical equipment. As we recall, within one year, we have witnessed three announcements in the Asir region, including the master plan for the new Abha International Airport, the launch of the Ardara company to develop the Al-Wadi project in the heart of Abha, and the Al-Soudah Development company. The Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources used the right theme for its launching ceremony: "We are racing the future to make Asir a global destination."With this new announcement of the second industrial city, the stunning region of Asir is reaching another milestone as one of the country's high-growth economic drivers, attracting local and global investors.Basil M.K. Why is China taking the dragon’s share of Saudi business?

Last week, the Saudi Ministry of Investment held its latest roadshow in China, where Minister Khaled Al-Faleh met his Chinese counterparts during a conference aimed at expanding trade, investments, and technology cooperation.During these meetings, bold statements were made, expressing China’s willingness to collaborate with Saudi Arabia in jointly promoting Beijing’s Belt and Road infrastructure investment program and Riyadh’s Vision 2030 initiative. The two countries also pledged to expand cooperation in energy, aircraft, photovoltaics, and artificial intelligence while working together to safeguard global industrial supply chains.China's ties with Saudi Arabia have recently deepened. In June of last year, the Saudi minister of energy, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, declared that the Kingdom would seek collaboration with China rather than competition. The relationship, initially anchored in hydrocarbon ties, has expanded significantly, with the two countries signing a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement and a series of investment agreements a year ago.During the conference last week, deals worth over $25 billion were signed, representing 60 agreements in energy, agriculture, tourism, mining, financial services, logistics, infrastructure, technology, and healthcare. A notable deal was signed in the information and communication technology sector, where the Saudi Esports Federation and Chinese Esports Tournament Operator VSPO signed a memorandum of understanding to promote opportunities, cooperation, and participation in electronic sports, amounting to $8.5 billion. As an active participant in the Saudi Ministry of Investments' frequent global roadshows promoting foreign direct investments into the Kingdom, I believe China has taken the dragon’s share in Saudi business. One of the leading family offices active in China, Ajlan & Bros Holding Group, also signed an agreement with the Oriental Energy Co. to explore areas of collaboration in manufacturing, amounting to $7.5 billion. Furthermore, the Saudi Ministry of Investment has signed a deal with China's state-owned CRRC Group to develop opportunities in the Kingdom, covering project development and manufacturing of renewable energy and sustainable mobility, with a total worth of $2 billion. My encounters with Chinese companies began early last year when BMG represented a leading Chinese semiconductor manufacturer. Since then, this manufacturer has partnered with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology to conduct a comprehensive research and development exercise aimed at serving the Saudi market. As some may be aware, semiconductor technology forms the physical foundation of the third and fourth industrial revolutions. It is crucial for numerous applications, including AI, renewable energy, data storage, sensors, communication, and lighting. This technology-driven initiative, once commercialized, will be a game-changer in the Saudi market.China is becoming Saudi Arabia's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade exceeding $106 billion last year, an increase of around 30 percent from 2021. As an active participant in the Saudi Ministry of Investment's' frequent global roadshows promoting foreign direct investments into the Kingdom, I believe China has taken the dragon’s share in Saudi business.Basil M.K. The Saudi 2024 budget and its logistics pillar

Every year, the Saudi British Society awards one person from each of the countries for their outstanding contributions to enhancing relations between the two nations. In September, I received an email from a friend, William Paty, informing me that the SBS trustees had nominated me for this year’s award and asking if I would be willing to accept the prize on Thursday, Nov. 23, during the society’s annual dinner at the Institute of Directors’ building in Pall Mall, London. Rawabi Holding sponsored the award. In the early 1990s, I was involved with SBS events during the post of the late ambassador Dr. Ghazi Al-Gosaibi, followed by Prince Turki Al-Faisal. The aims of the SBS include promoting closer friendship and understanding between the people of Saudi Arabia and the UK and bringing together British citizens and visitors interested in Saudi Arabia with likeminded Saudis.Thursday’s award night brought back fond memories of London, where I lived and worked for one-third of my career.Farewell words cannot be free of mixed emotions, and my emotions cannot be free of mixed feelings. Last Thursday was full of emotions and a night to remember for years. One of my dear friends had wished me a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. I will aim for it.I was in the city for the birth of my youngest daughter, Alma. Hajj services companies — a new sector to watch

As a key economic driver and a major cornerstone of the non-oil sector, the continuous development of Hajj and Umrah organizations and services is among the top priorities of the Saudi government’s vision. The Kingdom’s economic blueprint for 2030 includes plans to further enhance the services offered to visitors undertaking Hajj and Umrah, including increasing the capacity to accommodate up to 30 million pilgrims per year by 2030.Since the end of the COVID-19 era, the Saudi government has taken significant steps to enhance the Hajj and Umrah experience. These measures include the implementation of digital transformation and artificial intelligence to facilitate the movement of worshipers and visitors to holy sites, the introduction of initiatives such as providing each child with a bracelet containing personal information in case of getting lost, granting women the ability to perform Umrah without the company of a male companion, and, most importantly, improving the business model of the multi-generational-owned Hajj and Umrah service providers, known as Arbab Al-Tawafah, as they have been referred to for many years. The newly transformed Hajj services sector is set to adopt a more institutional track with corporate governance and transparency, aligning with the Saudi government’s vision to deliver the highest quality services to all pilgrims. At BMG Financial Group, we have been conducting numerous workshops aimed at educating owners and managers of family-owned businesses on the intricacies of the initial public offering journey and its associated readiness requirements. Recently, we had the honor of hosting senior executives from Arbab Al-Tawafah at our Jeddah offices. This workshop served as both a knowledge-sharing session on the dynamics of this sector and an educational opportunity to delve into the business model specific to Arbab Al-Tawafah.After meeting with executives from various companies and discussing their IPO journeys, the Mutawfis for Pilgrims from African Non-Arab Countries Co. became the first candidate to complete the initial step of signing a mandate. Following their participation in our workshop, several meetings occurred to comprehend the benefits and advantages of going public. These sessions involved senior executives, including the board of directors led by chairman Ahmed Sindi. This experience was exceptionally educational for us, given the novelty of this sector and the absence of benchmarks. My team and I underwent a rapid learning curve regarding the business models of these companies, the backgrounds of their international clients, their challenges and the unwavering support of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. The newly transformed Hajj services sector is set to adopt a more institutional track with corporate governance and transparency, aligning with the Saudi government’s vision to deliver the highest quality services to all pilgrims. Going public marks the initial step in this transformative journey, and Hajj services companies are poised to become a notable sector in the Saudi capital market in the coming years.Basil M.K. Evolution of asset management business in KSA

In my opinion, the asset management business in Saudi Arabia has undergone four phases: pre-Capital Market Authority, post-CMA establishment, during the latest leadership of the CMA, and after the recent new initiatives by the Public Investment Fund.I started my investment banking career in the late 80s with the Saudi National Bank, which used to be called the National Commercial Bank. After my training rounds in different divisions, I was placed in the newly created Investment Management Division. My first assignment was setting up the Shariah-compliant International Trade Fund, a fixed-income instrument applying the Murabaha guidelines.Back then, investment funds were a novelty in the Saudi market, and we had to go through extensive training exercises with the bank’s branch managers. The head of the IMD then, Fred Crawford, headhunted from Citi, was working around the clock to launch as many funds as possible. He approached and hired Frank Russel International, a leading global advisor, to help SNB select and manage the managers. I remember within a few weeks of launching the ITF, we raised around $200 million. Our core team of professionals back then included four Saudis, two Americans, and one British. Our regulator was the Saudi Central Bank.Years later, upon my return from a 15-year London tenure with SNB and the International Investor, a Kuwaiti-based boutique investment bank, I set up BMG Financial Group, which was granted the first license in the country. The CMA was a few years old, marking the second phase of the evolution of asset management. BMG was the first national firm to produce world-class research with recommendations for listed stock trading. Also, we were working closely with the CMA team on exploring and structuring new funds, such as exchange-traded funds. Due to the decision by the government to take over 30 insurance companies public via initial public offerings, we decided to focus primarily on advising businesses to cope with the unprecedented demands of arranging insurance companies’ IPOs. To date, we are the only investment bank that managed to handle three IPOs simultaneously. The future of asset management in Saudi Arabia beckons, and I stand as a testament to the transformative journey that has brought us to this pivotal juncture. As for the third phase, which I believe started under the CMA’s new dynamic and forward-thinking management, quantum-leap evolution has occurred in the asset management business in terms of total assets under management, number of funds, global indices that included Saudi equities, and the noticeable increase of licensed asset managers. The fourth phase is linked to PIF’s new initiatives. Last week, during the Future Investment Initiative, there was a PIF asset management forum. Mohammed El-Kuwaiz, CMA chairman, and Yazeed Al-Humied, PIF deputy governor and head of investments in the Middle East and North Africa region, introduced two new initiatives: the managers’ gate platform and the portfolio management development program. The managers’ gate platform aims to promote growth in the asset management ecosystem by exploring potential opportunities and facilitating PIF’s seamless collaboration with fund managers. The portfolio management development program, sponsored by SNB, aims to provide financial market training of the highest quality to aspiring portfolio managers in the country.According to authoritative sources at CMA and PIF, the evolution witnessed over the past decades, while impressive, merely scratches the surface of the asset management potential inherent within the Saudi market. This untapped potential is poised for substantial growth in the years to come.It is our unequivocal mission at BMG to seize this moment and reactivate our license, emerging as a dynamic and influential player during this fourth phase of evolution and beyond. The future of asset management in Saudi Arabia beckons, and I stand as a testament to the transformative journey that has brought us to this pivotal juncture.Basil M.K. Sky’s the limit for Asir’s international brand for tourism

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman recently made two important announcements relating to the Asir region. The first was launching a master plan for the new Abha International Airport that aims to embody an architectural identity consistent with the heritage of the region, transforming it into a prominent landmark in the Kingdom. The airport’s design will also showcase Saudi culture, while offering a slick travel experience for passengers. The upgrade will raise the airport’s capacity to more than 13 million passengers annually, a tenfold increase on the current 1.5 million. It will also handle more than 90,000 flights per year, a significant rise from the present figure of 30,000.As well as looking to boost the region’s tourist trade, the new hub will also fulfil Asir’s development and aviation strategies in line with Vision 2030 by increasing air connectivity to 250 destinations and transporting 330 million passengers. The crown prince’s second announcement was the launch of Ardara Co. to develop the AlWadi project in the heart of Abha in the region’s south. AlWadi – meaning, the valley – will span 2.5 million square meters and be developed with sustainability at its core.It will enhance quality of life by dedicating more than 30 percent of the project’s area as green open spaces, with 16 km of waterfront, 17 km of sports trails, and cultural and community activities. The launch of Ardara Co. aligns with the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s strategy to unlock the capabilities of promising sectors, including tourism and entertainment, and diversify the Kingdom’s economy with a projected $5 billion to the country’s non-oil gross domestic product.Ardara Co. aims to provide investment and partnership opportunities for local and international investors across a range of sectors, including hospitality, arts, culture, food, and agriculture, as well as retail and entertainment, to further strengthen the partnership with the private sector. The two announcements came after the launch of Soudah Development Co., with expected investments of more than SR11 billion ($3 billion) in infrastructure and tourism projects to enhance the visitor experience in Soudah and parts of Rijal Almaa.During my last trip to Asir and upon landing at Abha airport, I saw the clouds hugging the mountains with the most stunning views. When I met regional governor, Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz, I witnessed his committees of young women and men working in workshops like beehives.I realized then that the Asir region was going through a significant transformation that will pave the way for a tourist experience to be remembered for a lifetime.Basil M.K. Logistics — the backbone of the economy

Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics Services Saleh Al-Jasser was in Ankara last week to explore cooperation in transportation and logistics services with his Turkish counterpart, Abdulkadir Uraloglu. The two officials discussed issues related to the transport and logistics sectors in their respective countries, as well as mutual investment and cooperation opportunities in line with the Kingdom's National Transport and Logistics Strategy. It is worth noting that bilateral discussions between the officials of the two countries have taken place since the state visit of the Turkish president and his delegation to Jeddah last July.Al-Jasser's visit aimed to strengthen ties, support air carriers, expand maritime connectivity by increasing the number of shipping lines, and promote partnership between the two sides to enhance the Kingdom's position on the logistics map and boost trade volume between the two countries and beyond.Saudi Arabia is an important international hub due to its strategic central location and vast area. In addition to these location and size advantages, the government has undertaken an ambitious plan to enhance its logistics infrastructure.Companies can cater to over 2 billion potential customers across three continents by utilizing the Kingdom as an international logistical hub. With the doors opening for the private sector, these companies will improve and enhance their logistical infrastructure to leverage the new opportunities.Given the Kingdom’s sizeable food import volumes and arid climate, it is imperative to establish a robust warehousing and distribution system.Investments in new infrastructure, specialized facilities, and economic zones will further expand these opportunities. During my recent visit to the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, I met with the owners of a cargo drone manufacturer who are considering Riyadh as a potential hub for their regional operations in the Gulf.Given the Kingdom's sizeable food import volumes and arid climate, it is imperative to establish a robust warehousing and distribution system.Warehousing is a significant pillar of the logistics ecosystem in the country. Another key pillar is transportation, which is experiencing substantial growth in Saudi Arabia. Modes of transportation are vital veins for creating an attractive investment environment in various sectors. They play a crucial role in the efficient movement of passengers and goods, while also attracting private investments for essential transportation projects.A case in point, cargo firm SAL Saudi Logistics Services received orders worth $48.6 billion for its $678 million initial public offering, which is set to be the Kingdom’s second-largest this year. Additionally, with the significant announcement of Riyadh Air, everyone is anticipating it to be a game-changer in commercial air travelling space. As the backbone of the economy, the government has been moving swiftly, implementing enhancements and reforms to maintain the logistics ecosystem in its most efficient and competitive structure, making it attractive to both local and international investors.Basil M.K. ‘From Sofia with Business’

Last week, during my fact-finding trip to Sofia, I had the pleasant surprise of meeting Bulgarian President Rumen Radev when I met the economic advisory team at the Bulgarian presidential palace. My trip to Sofia was part of the due diligence exercise that we at BMG Financial Group need to perform before we start our private placement filing with the Capital Market Authority. That brief meeting with the president positively influenced our fact-finding mission.BMG had signed this mandate to set up an infrastructure fund because of its alignment with the Kingdom's industrial and logistics vision. As we know it, Saudi Arabia is an essential international logistics hub due to its central location and large economy.Over the past five years, Saudi Arabia has witnessed the most changes and advancements in the logistics and industrial activities in the region. According to a recent report issued by the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources’s National Industrial and Mining Information Center, the total number of industrial licenses issued by the ministry from the start of 2023 until the end of August amounted to 795.These licenses were allocated across various industries, such as non-metallic minerals, rubber, plastics, paper, and metal products. Notably, the number of factories in Saudi Arabia has reached 11,110, with a total investment volume of SR1.489 trillion ($397 billion). The report indicated that the investment volume for the new licenses amounted to SR1.6 billion.Following this fact-finding mission, my preliminary findings suggest that Riyadh and Sofia may indeed have strong industrial and logistical synergies. The presence of undervalued factories in various sectors, including energy substations, equipment, cargo drones, cranes, steel, and other heavy industries, presents a compelling case for bilateral investments and joint ventures.A case in point is the recent acquisition by TAWAL, an ICT infrastructure subsidiary owned by Saudi Telecom Co., which acquired and now operates more than 4,800 sites across Bulgaria, Croatia, and Slovenia. This acquisition enables TAWAL to offer a full range of passive infrastructure services, including ground-based towers, rooftop installations, small cells, and in-building solutions. The agreement, valued at €1.22 billion ($1.293 billion), aligns with STC’s strategy to expand its international presence in key markets with significant growth potential, with Bulgaria being the primary focus.Just as with the title of the James Bond movie starring the legendary Sean Connery, “From Russia with Love,” I adopt the title, “From Sofia with Business,” because I see industrial and logistical synergies between Riyadh and Sofia that can achieve strategic investment benefits for both nations.Basil M.K. Al-Ghalayini is the chairman and CEO of BMG Financial Group.

Why does the Kingdom intend to develop peaceful nuclear energy?

It was music to my ears to hear the statement by Saudi Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman at the 67th International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference in Vienna last week that the Kingdom intends to develop peaceful uses for nuclear energy across various fields. The minister also reiterated Saudi Arabia’s plans to operate a regional cooperation center with the International Atomic Energy Agency to create human capabilities in response to nuclear emergencies and other regulatory aspects at the national, regional and international level.Furthermore, Prince Abdulaziz stressed the importance of concerted international efforts to implement the provisions of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the importance of confronting nuclear proliferation in the Middle East, which requires the full implementation of Resolution No. 1995 to establish a nuclear weapon-free zone in the Middle East.It is worth noting that more than a decade ago, Saudi Arabia set up a dedicated center for nuclear energy under the name King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy. The city aims to integrate atomic and renewable energy with the national energy system by activating comparative advantages and creating new ones from all value chains in the atomic and renewable energy for sustainable development. The main advantage of nuclear power plants is they produce no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, and throughout their life cycle nuclear has about the same amount of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions per unit of electricity as wind and one-third of the emissions per unit of electricity when compared with solar.Nowadays, about 10 percent of electricity comes from nuclear power worldwide, with some countries relying on it heavily. For example, it provides about 70 percent of electricity in France, with a specific supply to the UK, and more than 40 percent in Sweden. The next generation of nuclear power plants, innovative advanced reactors, will generate much less nuclear waste than today’s reactors. For the Kingdom to have a pioneering role in the atomic and renewable energy sector, regionally and internationally, strategic partnerships with leading companies will be beneficial to accelerate its implementation plans. The Nuclear Energy Holding Co. will act as the country’s nuclear developer with an ambitious plan to build reactors with a nuclear capacity of 17 gigawatts by 2040.As someone passionate about renewable energy, I recently started following up actively on the nuclear energy news because it will be the most important renewable energy option, considering all its advantages. I hope to attend the IAEA conference next year as a delegate and talk about the Kingdom’s progress in this important renewable energy source.Basil M.K. A corridor of prosperity

My last experience with the G20 meetings was at the Antalya summit in Turkey in 2015. I attended the G20 Sherpa meetings where King Salman led the Saudi delegation. Based on media coverage, it appears that this year’s G20 meetings in India have made a historic announcement in the logistics field.During the G20 meetings, the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the US, India, France, Germany, Italy, and the EU announced a plan to develop the new India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. This landmark corridor is expected to stimulate economic development through enhanced connectivity and economic integration across two continents, thus unlocking sustainable and inclusive economic growth.Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who led the Saudi delegation at the G20 meetings, said: “This economic corridor will increase trade exchange between India, the Middle East, and Europe.“It will contribute to ensuring global energy security and will work on laying pipelines to export electricity and hydrogen,” the crown prince added.Indian officials emphasized the potential of the IMEC to serve as a green and digital bridge. They highlighted its ability to improve efficiency, reduce costs, generate employment, and decrease carbon emissions. This corridor is a major undertaking aimed at strengthening physical connectivity and unlocking extensive commercial prospects, which will reshape global trade routes. The Kingdom has been implementing a strategy to consolidate its strategic position as a global logistics hub, improve the quality of life in Saudi cities, achieve a balanced public budget, and enhance the performance of the government apparatus. The IMEC, a rail and shipping corridor connecting India to Europe through West Asia, is anticipated to have a lasting impact. The eight signatories of the IMEC collectively represent around half of the global economy and 40 percent of the world’s population, with India alone being the most populous country in the world. The Kingdom has been implementing a strategy to consolidate its strategic position as a global logistics hub, improve the quality of life in Saudi cities, achieve a balanced public budget, and enhance the performance of the government apparatus.Last month, the crown prince launched a plan to construct over 59 logistics centers, with the aim of transforming the Kingdom into a global logistical hub. This plan seeks to develop the infrastructure of the Saudi logistics sector, diversify the local economy, and elevate the status of Saudi Arabia as a leading investment destination. These 59 centers will be established across the entire Kingdom, including Riyadh, Makkah, Dammam, and 18 other cities. As we are aware, logistics plays a crucial role in any economy. While specific information regarding the timeline and cost of implementation remains undisclosed, experts anticipate that this significant announcement made during the G20 meetings will pave the way for a prosperous corridor benefiting all stakeholders.Basil M.K. Riyadh hosts world’s largest real estate gathering

A few weeks ago I wrote an article about innovation in housing in the Kingdom. Housing is undoubtedly a crucial pillar of the country’s vision. On Sunday, Cityscape launched its largest convention ever, in partnership with the Ministry of Municipal, Rural Affairs and Housing. The event aims to become the most significant global real estate gathering the world has ever seen.Cityscape is widely recognized as the premier international property investment and development event, bringing together visionaries from around the world to shape the future of urban landscapes. With its influential platform and strong commitment to sustainable development, Cityscape serves as a catalyst for innovation and growth in the real estate sector. The event provides industry professionals, investors, and thought leaders with a unique opportunity to participate in meaningful discussions, gain valuable insights, and establish strategic partnerships. With a wide range of networking opportunities, informative panel discussions, and interactive exhibits, Cityscape showcases the latest trends and innovations in the real estate industry. While driving to the conference venue, I noticed that it is located on the outskirts of Riyadh, which allows for accommodating the expected traffic of approximately 200,000 delegates. These participants include global stakeholders from across the entire real estate ecosystem. The four-day conference will host numerous master developers, including the notable giga-project NEOM. Additionally, there will be B2B sessions involving developers, architects, proptech, consultants, and contractors.I have received at least six invitations from friends who are active developers, showcasing their latest innovations and technologies. One of the international companies taking part in Cityscape is Planet Smart City. I had the opportunity to meet their leadership at BMG’s Economic Forum held at the London Stock Exchange last July. Planet Smart City caught my attention due to their focus on developing affordable residential real estate projects in countries where demand significantly exceeds supply. Their units are typically aimed at low-income workforce communities.During the opening show, I witnessed an update on King Salman Park. As someone who resided near Hyde Park in London for many years, I am eagerly anticipating the unveiling of this iconic landmark, which is considered the finest gift to the city of Riyadh.I must admit that the Ministry of Municipal, Rural Affairs and Housing is putting in commendable efforts to expedite the growth of the housing ecosystem in the country.Having attended previous Cityscape shows, I can confidently say that this gathering is truly magnificent. Even the Cityscape Vice President Chris Speller declared it as the most significant event in Cityscape’s history and the world’s largest real estate gathering.Basil M.K. Should advanced nuclear energy be focus of Saudi lower-carbon emissions strategy?

My first introduction to renewable energy occurred in 2003 when I attended a presentation at the World Bank mission office in Riyadh. The main focus of the presentation was the vast economic potential of solar energy in Saudi Arabia. Alongside the environmental advantages of solar power, the country’s unique geographical and climatic conditions make the utilization of renewable energy sources highly appealing from an economic standpoint.ACWA Power was established, and grew in Saudi Arabia and internationally a few years later. The company has become one of the world’s leading independent power-generation producers and a leader in renewable energy applications, be it solar, wind or even hydrogen. For someone close to its leadership, I firmly believe that ACWA Power makes a perfect case study at Harvard Business School to be taught to future global business leaders.Years later, the Saudi government set up a dedicated center for nuclear energy: King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy. The city aims to integrate atomic and renewable energy with the national energy system by activating comparative advantages and creating new ones from all value chains in atomic and renewable energy for sustainable development. Also, a Saudi National Atomic Energy Project has been launched to enable civil nuclear energy in the Kingdom to contribute to the national energy mix under local requirements and international commitments.I recently met Prof. Stefano Buono, founder and CEO of NewCleo, a nuclear energy company that aims to generate safe, clean, economical and practically inexhaustible nuclear energy. NewCleo is using nuclear waste as fuel through a profoundly innovative combination of existing and accessible technologies. To accelerate its plan to achieve zero emissions, the Saudi government could consider choosing an advanced, Generation IV, sustainable technology to start its nuclear program.Nuclear power plants produce no greenhouse gas emissions during operation, and throughout their life cycle, nuclear has approximately the same amount of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions per unit of electricity as wind, and one-third of the emissions per unit of electricity compared to solar.Experts have concluded that to achieve the deep decarbonization required to keep the average global temperature rise below 1.5°C, combating climate change would be much harder without an increased role for nuclear. Because nuclear power is reliable and can be deployed on a large scale, it can directly replace fossil fuel plants, avoiding the combustion of fossil fuels for electricity generation. The use of nuclear energy today avoids emissions roughly equivalent to removing one-third of all cars from the world’s roads.Globally, around 10 percent of our electricity comes from nuclear power. However, some countries rely heavily on it, with nuclear providing more than 70 percent of electricity in France and more than 40 percent in Sweden. The next generation of nuclear power plants is expected to generate much less nuclear waste than today’s reactors. To accelerate its plan to achieve zero emissions, the Saudi government could consider choosing an advanced, Generation IV, sustainable technology to start its nuclear program. This would be a better option than an old technology that produces more waste, is less safe, and is expensive. Institutions such as King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, and King Abdullah University for Science and Technology, can play an active role in the research and development of the next generation of nuclear power and its industrial applications, in collaboration with leading strategic partners.Basil M.K. A new regulator for the Saudi insurance sector

Last week, the Council of Ministers approved the establishment of the Insurance Authority. The main objective of the new regulator is to boost the efficiency of the insurance sector and increase its contribution to the Kingdom’s non-oil gross domestic product. The new independent entity will also help develop the insurance industry and create well-established institutions capable of growth and competition to enhance the industry and the Kingdom’s economy. The new entity, which will commence operations in less than 90 days, will take over insurance-related responsibilities previously held by the Central Bank and the Saudi Council of Health Insurance.Upon taking over its obligations, the new entity will consolidate all the insurance regulatory measures into a single regulator and transfer all communication channels related to regulation and compliance in the insurance sector to the new Insurance Authority. The Central Bank confirmed that policyholders and beneficiaries are still subject to the relevant regulations, and this will not impact the contractual relationship between policyholders and the insurance companies. Existing policies, claims, or fully effective complaints will remain intact. The insurance disputes and infractions adjudication committees will continue with no change. To attract international players and make Saudi Arabia a regional insurance hub, sufficient and attractive incentives are needed. The Saudi insurance market is unique compared to other regional or international insurance markets. It is highly fragmented, with the top five companies accounting for 71 percent of the total gross written premium. We at BMG Financial Group have been involved in the Saudi insurance sector almost 15 years, taking half of the insurance companies public back then and now moving to the mergers and acquisitions arena. The consolidation spree in the insurance sector started back in 2020 with the first merger transaction of Walaa Cooperative Insurance Co. with three companies, namely MetLife, American International Group, and Arab National Bank for Cooperative Insurance. Later, Gulf Union Cooperative Insurance Co. merged with Al-Ahlia Cooperative Insurance Co., followed by the merger of Aljazira Takaful Cooperative and Solidarity Saudi Takaful. Last year, Walaa Cooperative Insurance merged with SABB Takaful, and Arabian Shield Cooperative Insurance merged with Al-Ahli Takaful. The consolidation process is still in operation as we speak. In my opinion, during the next five years, the Saudi insurance market will still be ripe for consolidation, and the total number of listed companies will shrink from 26 to 15. The new authority will face a few challenges once it takes over. These include how to handle the monopoly of the top three companies. Also, creating value for all stakeholders, not only the end customers, especially since many major shareholders have suffered significant losses for years. Furthermore, to attract international players and make Saudi Arabia a regional insurance hub, sufficient and attractive incentives are needed.Basil M.K. Developing safe, sustainable nuclear energy in the Kingdom

Most G20 economies have implemented initiatives to develop and generate nuclear energy that is safe, clean, and economical. More than a decade ago, Saudi Arabia set up a dedicated center for nuclear energy under the name King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy. The city aims to integrate atomic and renewable energy with the national energy system by activating the comparative advantages and creating new ones from all value chains in atomic and renewable energy for sustainable development in the country.Due to the rapid increase in energy demand across the industrial and residential sectors, and to reduce the reliance on hydrocarbons, the Kingdom is planning a sustainable energy mix that includes atomic energy to meet the needs of the Kingdom to produce electricity, desalinated water, and thermal energy. This will contribute to the process of balanced economic development. It is worth noting that the Saudi National Atomic Energy Project was launched to enable peaceful nuclear energy in the Kingdom to contribute to the national energy mix under local requirements and international commitments under the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.In addition, nuclear energy will play a significant role in reducing the increasing consumption of the nation’s fossil fuels while diversifying the nation’s economy. The project has four pillars to perform its mission. First, a large nuclear power plant, a reactor with an electrical capacity of 1200-1600 megawatts, aimed at supporting the base load in the electrical grid throughout the year.Secondly, small modular reactors are a nuclear energy option for processing heat applications and electrical power generation. The country currently uses a significant amount of fossil fuel for processing heat applications such as water desalination, refineries, and petrochemical plants, besides generating electricity. For the Kingdom to have a pioneering role in the atomic and renewable energy sector, regionally and internationally, strategic partnerships with leading companies will be beneficial to accelerate its implementation plans.Thirdly, the nuclear fuel cycle where uranium is one of the essential elements in civil applications of atomic energy. Saudi Arabia has uranium resources that can produce nuclear fuel for future national power reactors.Fourthly, establishing a legislative and regulatory framework for nuclear energy and radiation sources to ensure the highest levels of safety to protect individuals, society, and the environment from the undue harms of ionizing radiation and radiological activities in Saudi Arabia. For the Kingdom to have a pioneering role in the atomic and renewable energy sector, regionally and internationally, strategic partnerships with leading companies will be beneficial to accelerate its implementation plans.Recently, BMG has signed an advisory mandate with a leading nuclear energy developer, newcleo, to raise about €1 billion ($1.09 billion) capital by inviting strategic partners from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries to develop sustainable and safe energy utilizing innovative technologies.newcleo’s exclusive technology is leveraging the European experience on fast reactors to develop the next generation of nuclear power that will increase safety and reduce costs while dramatically reducing nuclear waste.newcleo 30 MWe and 200 MWe reactors are indeed using MOX (mixed oxides), a fuel developed in Belgium and France from the nuclear waste of other reactors that allows to extract from mined uranium, 200 times more energy, with multi-recycling in a closed cycle: A much more sustainable approach to nuclear energy.Basil M.K. Dual listing between Saudi Stock Exchange and other exchanges

Once we announced the reactivation of BMG’s IPO workshop sessions, planned monthly starting at the end of this month with dedicated sessions on dual listing, we received an overwhelming inquiry about the benefits of dual listing. As we know, the mechanism of a dual listing includes listing any security on two or more exchanges, aiming to benefit from access to additional capital and increased liquidity.Recently, there were reports that the Chinese and Saudi stock exchanges are in talks to allow exchange-traded funds to list on each other’s bourses as the countries look to deepen financial ties amid warming diplomatic relations. For China, an ETF Connect tie-up with Saudi Arabia will be a gateway to open its trillions of dollars of financial markets to international investors. The cross-listing of ETFs will allow investors in China and Saudi Arabia to trade funds tracking specific stocks or bond indexes listed on each other’s stock exchanges. As referred to above, the benefits of dual listing include gaining international exposure and access to more potential investors, which means access to more capital. Having shares traded in multiple time zones and in numerous currencies gives issuing companies more liquidity and a greater ability to raise capital, improving the company’s corporate governance, attracting better talents, and using it as an advertising strategy to attract foreign investors. For the local investors, the dual listing will allow issuers to diversify investment opportunities, especially in the sectors that may not be available in the local stock market. Before the cooperation with the Chinese stock exchange, Tadawul has been for years upgrading its trading system to accommodate dual listing protocols with other regional and global stock markets. Last February, Dar Al-Arkan, a Tadawul-listed company, announced the admission of Dar Global PLC, its independent international development subsidiary, to the Standard Segment of the Official List of the FCA and the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange. That was the first Saudi company, via its subsidiary, to dual list on the London stock exchange.Conventional wisdom states that dual listing will attract foreign investments as the benefits of a dual listing in the region are higher to reach global investors. As for the local investors, the dual listing will allow issuers to diversify investment opportunities, especially in the sectors that may not be available in the local stock market.Saudi Aramco last month met major Turkish contractors to discuss $50 billion worth of potential projects in the Kingdom. On the other side of the coin, it is worth noting that dual listing has certain disadvantages. Arbitrage is a risk associated with dual listing. This is the practice of taking advantage of a price difference between two or more markets. In this case, arbitrage can lead to share price discrepancies and volatility if not managed correctly.Basil M.K. Al-Ghalayini is the chairman and CEO of BMG Financial Group.

Why mining?

I have always believed that mineral resources are a great blessing from God for any country. Mining is a significant revenue driver for many economies worldwide. The Saudi mining sector’s revenue is estimated to account for the lion’s share of the country’s non-oil income.Under the supervision of the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, the government has successfully unlocked numerous investment prospects by granting licenses and concessions to local and international investors. The ministry’s efforts are attracting the who’s who in global mining circles to explore the promising investment opportunities the Kingdom offers.Statistics indicate that Saudi Arabia has a significant mineral potential that is relatively underexplored compared to other mature mining markets, with $1.3 trillion worth of untapped mineral assets across the country. With the right pool of investments and resources, the government can unlock the true potential of Saudi Arabia’s mining sector.Through its Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia has been on a global investment spree in recent years, looking for trophy assets in different sectors, including mining. The Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources’s efforts are attracting the who’s who in global mining circles to explore the promising investment opportunities the Kingdom offers.Recently, the PIF and Ma’aden — the publicly listed company created to lead the development of the mining industry in the country — have bid to purchase a 10 percent stake in Vale’s base metals unit, a subsidiary of a leading Brazilian mining company ranked as the world’s No. 2 iron ore supplier. Separately, investment firm Engine No. 1 will buy another 3 percent stake. The total amount to be paid by the trio consortium is circa $3.4 billion. Vale’s deal is the first significant investment in mining since it set up a joint venture with Ma’aden called Manara last January. The acquisition proceeds will help finance future investments over the next decade to fulfil the growing demand for nickel and copper in the switch to electric vehicles. Establishing a separate base metals unit with Saudi partners may also allow Vale to participate in a wave of consolidation in the industry.Saudi Aramco last month met major Turkish contractors to discuss $50 billion worth of potential projects in the Kingdom. This acquisition transaction is expected to close by the first quarter of 2024 with a price tag of Vale’s base metals unit circa $26 billion. Vale’s market capitalization in the Brazilian stock exchange was $67.4 billion at last Thursday’s closing price. In my opinion, this strategic long-term acquisition will maximize the diversification of our country’s mineral resources while developing Ma’aden’s international portfolio to become a global mining giant.Basil M.K. Saudi and Turkish relationship: a new era

For someone who has attended so many business forums involving Saudi and Turkiye, the one I attended last week was different.Firstly, post winning the last election, this was the first trip for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his ministers to the region, starting the Gulf Cooperation Council tour with Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea pride.Secondly, the government’s delegation participated in governmental meetings and the business forum, a new mindset by the new government to help the private sector.Thirdly, there was a keen interest from the Turkish private sector to explore and benefit from the opportunities offered by their counterparts in the Kingdom, evidenced by the presence of major companies’ chairmen and CEOs.Following the gradual deterioration of its currency over the past few years and in order to boost its international currency reserves, the Turkish government has put the attraction of foreign investment at the top of its agenda. The Ministry of Investment has created a record by organizing business forums almost every month with our counterparts in the G20 markets and other markets.Apart from the five governmental memorandums of understanding — which have been signed by the respective ministers from both sides, focusing on defense and energy — nine memorandums were signed between the private sector from both sides in sectors including construction, education, developments, agribusiness, tourism, and others. It is evident that the construction sector has taken the lion’s share in these agreements.Saudi Aramco last month met major Turkish contractors to discuss $50 billion worth of potential projects in the Kingdom.Murat Giray, CEO of Saudi Arabian Baytur Construction Co., said: “In line with the expanding relationship between the two countries, synergies utilizing the extensive Turkish construction expertise and capacity can be effectively employed in achieving the milestones of the Kingdom’s mega and giga-projects.”Saudi Arabian Baytur Construction Co. is a case in point when discussing the strategic cooperation between the two countries. It was established in 2008 in Alkhobar as a foreign investment company by leading Saudi contractors and Baytur Insaat Taahhut, a leading construction company founded in 1976 by the mega-conglomerate Cukurova Group.BMG Financial Group is advising Saudi Arabian Baytur Construction Co. in its further expansion in the Saudi market by inviting a value-added strategic partner. It is worth noting that the Ministry of Investment has created a record by organizing business forums almost every month with our counterparts in the G20 markets and other markets. From a private sector standpoint, I do not recall having such a frequency of high-quality and value-added business forums organized in the past.I want to sincerely thank my dear brother Khalid Al-Falih, minister of investment, and his team for extending this invitation, and others.Basil M.K. Innovations in housing for a better quality of life in Saudi Arabia

At the annual BMG Economic Forum at the London Stock Exchange on July 5, held under the theme “Riyadh: The City of the Future,” a few memoranda of understanding were signed in support of the Saudi government’s efforts to secure affordable housing for everyone. One MoU will see a company partner with the University of Manchester to spearhead an unprecedented scale-up of graphene-based technologies intended to cut global CO2 emissions substantially. The second involves a leading international construction company that uses in-house proprietary technology to carry out major construction projects with more environmentally friendly approaches, while the third will work toward the development of smart cities.Residential developments are a top priority for the Kingdom’s housing plan, a cornerstone of its Saudi Vision 2030. The Saudi Ministry of Municipal, Rural Affairs and Housing has been running against time to implement a campaign to achieve its targets through different initiatives. The National Housing Co. is at the forefront of this campaign. The Riyadh-headquartered real estate development giant seeks to provide affordable housing options via urban communities to meet the aspirations of the current and future generations.Residential developments are a top priority for the Kingdom’s housing plan, a cornerstone of its Saudi Vision 2030.Operating as the investment arm of the ministry, the company has contributed to advancing the country’s real estate sector by increasing the housing supply, enhancing the capabilities of property developers and service providers, and providing investment options to owners.A case in point, earlier this year, it announced the largest new residential suburb project in Riyadh: Al-Fursan Suburb. Al-Fursan Suburb covers an area of 35 million square meters in the northeast of Riyadh. It will include more than 50,000 residential units for over 250,000 people. The second phase of Khuzam Suburb, representing Riyadh’s largest real estate supply, was also announced. Situated in the north of Riyadh, it covers an area of over 21 million square meters. It will include 30,000 residential units for 150,000 people. These two projects align with the goals of Vision 2030’s Housing Program, including raising the rate of home ownership by Saudi families to 70 percent. Implementing these two megaprojects also meets Riyadh’s endeavor to increase the real estate supply. The residential suburbs are an extension of the company’s efforts to build modern, vibrant communities with a unique urban character and to provide housing and financing solutions accessible to Saudi families. On a recent occasion, I had a chat with my dear brother Ihab Hashani, vice minister at the ministry and chairman of the National Housing Co.He highlighted the ministry’s main housing objectives: raising the standard of living for people across the country and applying the most innovative quality-of-life guidelines across all its projects to achieve sustainability and well-being for its people.“The focus is on design to maintain our rich heritage and local identity,” he explained.Basil M.K. Expo 2030: Why Riyadh?

As my hometown and for someone who lived his childhood and grew up there in the years before college, it is such a special feeling to have the capital of the Kingdom, Riyadh, shortlisted to host such a glorious global exhibition like the Expo, and to see it competing with other top capitals in the world.Last week, during an official visit by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Kingdom unveiled in Paris the master plan for Riyadh Expo 2030, organized by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, with delegates from 179 member states of the Bureau International des Expositions. The plan aims to create an exceptional global experience, highlighting the importance of Riyadh and its positive role regionally and globally with the theme “Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow.”The site of Riyadh Expo 2030 will be near King Salman International Airport, which is under development at present, making it accessible for travelers arriving there. They will be able to reach the exhibition site within minutes by using the new Riyadh Metro network covering all parts of the city, and connecting to one of the three exhibition entrances via a modern road network. The exhibition’s design reflects the ancient urban style, history, culture, and nature of Riyadh. It also showcases the Kingdom’s shared concern with the rest of the world for climate change, and the proactive plans for the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative. Visitors to the Expo will be able to stroll through a modern green oasis located by one of the tributaries of Wadi As-Sulai, which passes through the exhibition site to demonstrate Riyadh’s commitment to preserving nature. The site of Riyadh Expo 2030 will be near King Salman International Airport, which is under development at present, making it accessible for travelers arriving there. The ESG topic and its relevance to Shariah-compliant guidelines were covered by two leading Shariah-compliant firms: SEDCO Capital and Alkhabeer Capital. That session was noticeably well presented and explained by the respective CEOs of these two firms.Another topic that was covered extensively was dual listings between the Saudi stock exchange and other exchanges in the region and internationally, including the Singapore Exchange, which signed a memorandum of understanding during the forum. It is worth mentioning that Americana Restaurants was the first dual listing between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.Saudi officials have said that the Kingdom aims to make Riyadh Expo 2030 the most sustainable and influential Expo ever, in line with its climate commitments to achieving carbon neutrality. The blueprint for the exhibition’s design also considers the reuse of the site to develop an innovative urban model that guarantees sustainability and enhances innovation and creativity. The upcoming annual BMG Economic Forum at London’s Stock Exchange on July 5 will carry the theme of Riyadh, the city of the future, with the opening keynote speech titled “Expo 2030: Why Riyadh?”Basil M.K. Saudi Arabia tapping into carbon credits economy

The Saudi sovereign Public Investment Fund, through its Regional Voluntary Carbon Market Company, last week announced a plan to launch a carbon credit exchange early next year. The company will also offer advisory services to companies looking to decarbonize their operations.Purchasing carbon credits is one way for a company to address emissions it is unable to eliminate. Carbon credits are certificates representing quantities of greenhouse gases that have been kept out of the air or removed from it. They create a financial incentive for companies to reduce their carbon emissions. Companies can also purchase credits from landowners that represent the avoided emissions to compensate for their pollution. While carbon credits have been in use for decades, the voluntary market for carbon credits has grown significantly in recent years.Carbon credits, also known as carbon offsets, permit the owner to emit a certain amount of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases. One credit enables the emission of one ton of carbon dioxide or the equivalent of other greenhouse gases. The market for the financial instrument could be worth more than $50 billion by 2030.The carbon credit is half of a so-called cap-and-trade program. Companies that pollute are awarded credits that allow them to continue to pollute up to a specific limit, which is reduced periodically. Meanwhile, the company may sell any unneeded credits to another company that needs them. Private companies are thus doubly incentivized to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Firstly, they must spend money on extra credits if their emissions exceed the cap. Secondly, they can make money by reducing emissions and selling their excess allowances. While carbon credits have been in use for decades, the voluntary market for carbon credits has grown significantly in recent yearsSaudi companies last week bought more than 2.2 million tons of carbon credits at an auction, as global demand for offsets is expected to grow amid ambitions to meet net-zero targets. Aramco and Saudi Electricity Company were among the 16 firms that paid about $6.37 per ton of carbon credits. The basket of credits in the auction included 18 projects representing a mix of carbon dioxide avoidance and removal, including improved clean cooking stoves and renewable energy projects. Three-quarters of the carbon credits originated from countries across the Middle East, North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Morocco, Egypt and South Africa. It is worth noting that, last year, Saudi Arabia conducted the Middle East’s first carbon offset auction. It announced the sale of more than 1.4 million tons of carbon credits, of which Aramco purchased 650,000..Future energy projects will be carbon-free ones. A case in point is the multibillion-dollar NEOM Green Hydrogen Company, a joint venture between ACWA Power, Air Products and NEOM, which will produce 600 tons per day of carbon-free hydrogen by the end of 2026 using 4 gigawatts of solar energy.Basil M.K. Tourism a significant driver of Saudi economic and social development

As part of Saudi Vision 2030, tourism is a cornerstone of the Kingdom’s transformation plan. With its massive size, which is almost 10 times that of the UK, Saudi Arabia offers a variety of tourist attractions in terms of coastal and inland landscapes, as well as weather all year round. For many economies worldwide, tourism is a crucial source of revenue, especially in countries where the tourism infrastructure has been well set up and prepared for years to suit and accommodate millions of tourists. In some leading economies, revenues generated from tourism make up a higher percentage of gross domestic product than any other sector.Another important feature is that the tourism sector is expected to be one of the largest employers in the country. The government aims to create more than 1 million jobs as part of its 20-program strategy designed to develop and employ human capital in the tourism sector. The process extends the country’s Vision 2030, with the tourism development program focused on achieving overall growth in domestic tourism revenues. As for spiritual tourism in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, the number of pilgrims is expected to reach about 30 million over the next decade. During the next 10 years, significant investments will be made in infrastructure, transportation and hospitality in Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah.Last week, Riyadh hosted another major event that covered investment opportunities in the tourism, entertainment and culture sectors. The forum reviewed investment opportunities in the tourism sector and their advantages. The conference also discussed the challenges entrepreneurs face and how they can find solutions to minimize the time and costs involved. The forum also explored the different financing initiatives and channels the Ministry of Tourism has created to assist small and medium-sized enterprises. This revenue will be generated from international tourists and local ones, who usually spend billions of riyals abroadWith the different tourist and entertainment attractions the country offers — including the Red Sea’s exquisite shores and marine life, the steep grand mountains and stunning landscape in the south, AlUla’s ruins in the north and the historical sites of Diriyah in the center, coupled with the attractions and amusement parks that are under construction — a sizable piece of the country’s future GDP will be provided by the tourism sector. This revenue will be generated from international tourists and local ones, who usually spend billions of riyals abroad. Next month, the tourism sector will be discussed and featured at the 16th edition of the BMG Economic Forum at the London Stock Exchange. The forum will also promote Riyadh as a candidate city for Expo 2030, including its UNESCO-certified attraction, the one and only Diriyah.Basil M.K. Saudi Arabia is blessed with an aspiring, youthful population

The statement of Saudi Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal Al-Ibrahim that the latest population census is “the most comprehensive and accurate” in the “Kingdom’s history” caught my attention recently.Last week, the General Authority for Statistics announced the Kingdom’s 2022 census, which puts the population of Saudi Arabia at just over 32 million, with Saudis at 18.8 million, or 58.4 percent, while non-Saudis total 13.4 million or 41.6 percent. The youth, under 30 years of age, make up 63 percent. As for non-Saudis, they dropped from a peak of 14.6 million in 2016 after the government began to impose extra fees on relatives of foreign workers. In 2020, more than 1 million foreigners left the Kingdom during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with the latest new directives and initiatives, including giga projects, economic zones and international firms relocating their regional headquarters to the Saudi capital, the number of foreign residents is expected to rise again.Given the evolution and change in the methodology used in the 2022 census, compared to that of 2010 (which relied mainly on fieldwork and documentation on paper), GASTAT has backcasted the population from the previous years based on the results of the 2022 Saudi census. Some may argue that the young population highlights the government’s challenges in diversifying the economy away from oil and creating jobs. In my opinion, I strongly believe having 63 percent below 30 is a blessing from Allah.Backcasting aligns with international best practice and reflects changes in census data resulting from improved methodologies. It is a fact that a population census is vital for any government to make informed decisions based on current and accurate data. The latest Saudi population census data should guide the government’s master plan for public services and policies, including education, housing, transportation, health, quality of life, and environmental protection. On the private sector front, the data helps the business and financial sectors to determine the size and growth of the market — encompassing details of consumers including occupation, geographical location, age and gender — to develop products and services. We at BMG ask our clients who want to go public to justify and support their financial projections with accurate consumer data for their products and services. Some may argue that the young population highlights the government’s challenges in diversifying the economy away from oil and creating jobs.In my opinion, I strongly believe having 63 percent below 30 is a blessing from Allah. Those vibrant and aspiring youngsters, males and females, are the backbone of the Saudi economy. The Public Investment Fund and its 70-plus newly created companies, as the main employer in the country, will have enough jobs for them.Basil M.K. Saudi Arabia’s three decades of pride in astronauts’ achievements

In 1985, after completing his space mission, Prince Sultan bin Salman visited Boston as part of his world tour. For me and my friends who were studying at Harvard, it was a memorable and historic day to meet the first Arab astronaut at the city’s Museum of Science. Back then, the Arab world needed communications through a satellite to cover all Arab countries. The idea of the Arab world’s first communications satellite resulted from the efforts of the Arab Telecommunication Union and the Arab Organization for Education, which are under the Arab League’s auspices. The Arab League agreed to set up an institution for satellite communications based in Riyadh.Almost three decades later, with the country’s vision to enhance the quality of life by creating better environments, while actively enabling the prospects of lucrative economic and monetary inventions to serve humanity, the Saudi Space Commission was set up in December 2018, chaired by Communications and Information Technology Minister Abdullah Alswaha. The primary roles of the commission include devising plans and policies for the national space sector, implementing national space strategy, promoting research and industrial activities in the field of space, developing technology for the launch of space vehicles and infrastructure, regulating all activities related to space missions and exploration, and working with government agencies and related parties in pursuit of common goals.Last week, another historic space mission kicked off from Houston in the US. Two young Saudi astronauts, Ali Alqarni and Rayyanah Barnawi, launched to the International Space Station aboard Axiom Mission 2, a four-person private mission operated by Axiom Space. Barnawi, a biomedical science researcher, made history by becoming the first Arab woman to go into space. As for Alqarni, he is a fighter jet pilot in the Royal Saudi Air Force. They are part of a 10-day mission along with two other astronauts.Ali Alqarni and Rayyanah Barnawi have inspired my four children and millions of other youngsters in Saudi Arabia and the Arab world. As part of their mission, the astronauts have begun conducting experiments in various nanomaterial therapeutic applications, such as drug delivery, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. They have also performed a test run of the DreamUp Nanoracks Space Kite payload, which will demonstrate the aerodynamic behavior of kites in microgravity. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Saudi Space Commission and Nanoracks, the mission will fly three experiments in microgravity to educate students. Alqarni and Barnawi have also delivered talks as part of an effort to engage students nationwide.Prince Sultan inspired me and millions of my generation in Saudi Arabia and the Arab world. Years later, he accepted our invitation to be guest of honor at the BMG Polo Cup, in the presence of the late Queen Elizabeth and the now-King Charles. He is the only astronaut we have had as a guest of honor throughout our 25-year history. Now, Alqarni and Barnawi have inspired my four children and millions of other youngsters in Saudi Arabia and the Arab world. From Prince Sultan to Alqarni and Barnawi, Saudi Arabia has continued its decades of space leadership.Basil M.K. Al-Ghalayini is the chairman and CEO of BMG Financial Group.

Localizing semiconductor technology in Saudi Arabia

I recently received an invitation to attend the Future of Semiconductors Forum, a specialized gathering addressing the growth potential and challenges facing this critically important sector for humanity. As some may know, semiconductor technology is the physical foundation of the Third and Fourth Industrial Revolutions. It is crucial for numerous applications, including artificial intelligence, renewable energy, data storage, sensors, communication and lighting. So, given the strategic importance of semiconductor technologies globally and the emerging opportunities for transformative impacts in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, the Ministry of Investment, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and the Research, Development and Innovation Authority teamed up to organize the second Future of Semiconductors Forum to discuss the localization of electronic chips and strengthening of the digital economy sector in Saudi Arabia.Minister of Investment Khaled Al-Faleh gave the first keynote speech, highlighting the Kingdom’s strategic intent to enter the semiconductor production space as part of its range of investments in relevant education and research programs. Furthermore, the Saudi government is being proactive in developing and onboarding this vital industry to benefit the Kingdom and the world. The Saudi government is being proactive in developing and onboarding this vital industry to benefit the Kingdom and the worldDr. Munir El-Desouki, president of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, gave another keynote speech. He highlighted his organization’s experience and leadership role in developing the semiconductor industry in the Kingdom, including the heavy investment the government has made in acquiring the state-of-the-art facilities and equipment required to develop this industry. And Dr. Tony Chan, president of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, emphasized the role the university has played in active research and development for the semiconductor industry globally. It is worth noting that this was the first participation of the newly created Research, Development and Innovation Authority, which is a solid commitment by the government to support innovations in the Kingdom. This was my first time attending such a specialized high-tech forum, but I am no stranger to semiconductors. I was keen to participate and accept the kind invitation because we at BMG have decided to advise international companies with a strategic intent to partner with local stakeholders and bring their expertise and know-how to the Kingdom. As a case in point, we are working with a leading international company to sign a memorandum of understanding with a government entity early next month. The Kingdom will implement a national strategic plan for advanced manufacturing and technological capability, with the goals of involving organizations aligned with the Saudi vision. There are many benefits to localizing semiconductor technology capabilities in diverse sectors, such as the digital economy, the automotive industry, AI manufacturing, renewable energy, and defense.Basil M.K. How cloud seeding will benefit the Kingdom

It was music to my ears when I saw last week’s news coverage of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture signing an agreement to buy five aircraft for its cloud seeding program. The government seeks to create new water resources and increase green space through cloud seeding. Here is a brief background for those unfamiliar with cloud seeding or who have never heard of it. Cloud seeding is a type of weather modification that aims to change the amount or type of precipitation that falls from clouds by dispersing substances or electric charges into the air. Light planes are fitted with flares and fly into the base of clouds, where these flares are released. The flares contain salt crystals mixed with potassium chloride, sodium chloride and magnesium, which encourages water vapor in the clouds to form droplets heavy enough to fall as rain. This method of water penetration is not new. Back in 1952, a freak storm caused floods that destroyed the UK village of Lynmouth, resulting in the deaths of 34 people. Reports emerged years later that the storm might have resulted from a government-backed cloud seeding project. More than a decade later, during the Vietnam War, the US Army allegedly used cloud seeding techniques to increase monsoon rain. In 2015, the UAE government launched its Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science to encourage research on rain enhancement. The program aims to enhance water resources, develop vegetation and enable the Kingdom to benefit from renewable water sources. The Saudi cloud seeding program includes five aircraft. Four will be for cloud seeding and the specially equipped fifth plane will be for weather and climate research and studies. It is worth noting that the Kingdom is the second country in the world to own this type of research aircraft and that the industrial cloud seeding program aims to enhance water resources, develop vegetation and enable the Kingdom to benefit from renewable water sources.A year ago, the ministry launched the program’s first phase to increase precipitation levels, create new water sources, increase green space and intensify vegetation to mitigate desertification and drought through qualified local staff with the highest skill levels. Now, the program has completed its third phase and is preparing to launch the fourth. The preliminary studies of rainfall resulting from the first three phases’ initial results indicate precipitation of 3.5 billion cubic meters of water in target areas. There is always a question about the rationale behind cloud seeding. From a cost standpoint per cubic meter, producing water through cloud seeding is cheaper than desalination. Furthermore, rainfalls triggered by cloud seeding are vital for the ambitious Saudi Green Initiative to plant millions of trees nationwide.Basil M.K. Riyadh’s transformation and its new investment opportunities

Vision 2030 remains an essential guide for building the Saudi Arabian economy. And foreign direct investment is an indispensable enabler of the vision. The Ministry of Investment and other ministries have organized many forums and events to introduce the country’s investment opportunities. In the future, international investors and global fund managers anticipate seeing the new trends of conferences focus on the speedy transformation of the Saudi capital, Riyadh, as the city of the future. This summer, the BMG Economic Forum at the London Stock Exchange will focus on the Saudi capital, Riyadh, as “The City of the Future.” The main topics will include Riyadh investment opportunities, such as Diriyah, Murabba, Riyadh Air, King Salman Airport, Qiddiya, King Khalid Financial District. The forum will also talk about Riyadh as the new host for global companies’ regional offices, the Green Riyadh projects and, most importantly, Riyadh’s candidacy for World Expo 2030.It is worth noting that the Royal Commission for Riyadh City has the mandate to make Riyadh one of the 10 largest cities in the world, with a noticeable increase in its population of circa 15 million by 2030. The commission is responsible for the urban, economic, social and cultural development of Riyadh, with a masterplan to change the lifestyle and image of the Kingdom’s capital. The forum will highlight the new attractions in the Saudi capital and the efforts to create a more sustainable, mobile and livable city, with family facilities, sports events, advanced health facilities and best-in-class international schools. As for Diriyah, the forum will cover its different phases. These include the first phase of becoming a UNESCO-certified site, the second phase of creating iconic districts similar to the Champs-Elysees and Madison Avenue in New York, and the third phase that relates to the huge residential complex, including global five-star hotel brands and Michelin-awarded restaurants.Other key topics in the forum will include the new Murabba’s iconic features, King Salman Park, which will be the lungs of Riyadh, Qiddiya entertainment city and the newly created Riyadh Air and its King Salman Airport hub.On the financing front, the forum will include sessions on how best to secure funding for these projects in terms of financial instruments and capital markets, including dual listing between Tadawul and the London Stock Exchange. .Basil M.K. Ehsan platform and the digitization of noble contributions

Since the company’s inception 25 years ago, we at BMG Foundation have prided ourselves on being one of the first organizations to coin the term corporate social responsibility. Since then, organizations such as Saudi National Bank, Savola and Abdul Latif Jameel have started to introduce specially designed CSR programs to support qualified beneficiaries in the country. Also, prominent old-money families such as Al-Rajhi, Al-Subaie, Al-Sharbatly, Bin Mahfouz, Al-Jomiah, Al-Fozan and others long ago set up in-house charitable organizations and foundations. It is worth noting that, last week, the BMG Foundation’s latest CSR initiative was completed after three months of its tour of government and local universities in the Kingdom. This campaign aimed to encourage university students to unlock their talents by designing the most innovative and creative awareness campaign, be it an image or short video, in three categories: safe driving, water conservation, and adopting a healthy lifestyle. The awards ceremony will be held next month, when the six winners will be awarded prizes in the presence of senior officials, the families of the winners and sponsors of the awareness campaign. As part of the Saudi Vision 2030 overall plan to enhance the quality of life in the Kingdom, including streamlining charitable contributions in the country, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority two years ago launched the Ehsan platform to support charitable giving via an organized and guaranteed digital system. Last Monday, the third national campaign took place, coinciding with the holy month of Ramadan, in which a large number of beneficiaries received donations from individuals, companies, banks and other donors through this platform. Ehsan eases the efforts of donors and philanthropists, reduces the difficulties in making bank transfers and organizes payment portals through laptops or even mobile phones.Ehsan eases the efforts of donors and philanthropists, reduces the difficulties in making bank transfers and organizes payment portalsThe Ehsan platform has developed among the masses the trend and culture of community solidarity in line with the goals of Vision 2030. Nationals and residents from different age groups and all levels of society have started to use Ehsan to support community projects and humanitarian cases by donating through this reliable official channel. Since its inception, Ehsan has managed to consolidate beneficiaries in one national platform that guarantees transparency to the donors and provides beneficiaries with various donation opportunities that are updated continuously. To increase awareness of the third campaign, the proceedings of the donations event were broadcast live on the Al-Ekhbariya television channel. In my opinion, the digitization of a national contributions campaign is a landmark in Saudi Arabia. The Ehsan platform will strengthen the Kingdom’s position as a world leader in charitable giving. Its success has resulted in it receiving more than SR3.3 billion ($880 million), benefiting more than 4.8 million people and organizations in various humanitarian cases and community projects.Basil M.K. Umrah season in Ramadan is back to its peak

As we observe Ramadan, performing Umrah is one of the holy month’s main rituals. Saudi Arabia has assumed a prominent place in the world and has become synonymous with hospitality and a warm welcome to all Muslims. According to the latest statistics, as of last week, the number of visitors performing Umrah has exceeded the 10 million mark. This number is expected to increase significantly during the last 10 days of Ramadan. Since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Saudi Government has taken major steps to enhance the Hajj and Umrah experience. Firstly, Tawfig Al-Rabiah was appointed minister of Hajj and Umrah after his sterling success as minister of health. Many of us believe that his appointment was in recognition of his record during COVID-19, with the aim to repeat it with his new portfolio.Another major step in enhancing the Umrah experience is to apply digital transformation and artificial intelligence to play an active role in the mobility of worshipers and visitors to holy sites. The newly-introduced AI technologies around the mosques have been helping to control crowds, ensuring that the right number of people are present anywhere around the sites at any given time. AI will be a game-changer for the ease and convenience of crowd mobility, which will reduce risks of unfortunate accidents or stampedes. The most remarkable new rule and enhancement has been giving women the ability to perform Umrah without the company of a male relative or guardian. One enhancement to the Umrah experience was the management and care of children. With the influx of children joining their parents, the Agency for Women’s Social, Voluntary and Humanitarian Services has launched an initiative to provide each child with a bracelet with personal information in case they get lost. The bracelet will list the child’s name, relevant data, and their accompanying adult’s contact information. But the most remarkable new rule and enhancement has been giving women the ability to perform Umrah without the company of a mahram (male relative or guardian). Moreover, surveillance cameras are obligatory in vital areas, including airports, border crossings, the Grand Mosque, and the Prophet’s Mosque, to ensure women’s safety while performing pilgrimages. From business and investment standpoints, with millions of visitors and worshipers performing Umrah this Ramadan, all supply chain providers of services, including transportation, catering, and accommodation, are enjoying great recoveries for their businesses, exceeding their peaks before the COVID-19 era.Basil M.K. Seek knowledge even if you have to go as far as China

Up until recently, China was not an active tourist or business destination for millions of people in Saudi Arabia. Decades of cold war in the last century between the Western bloc and China, coupled with the language barrier and other cultural factors, distanced us from dealing with the country. Over recent years, however — especially after the visit of Chinese Premier Xi Jinping to Riyadh in December — a new era has been paved between the two countries and historic milestones are in the making. Currently, China is Saudi Arabia’s largest trading partner, with the Kingdom’s export value to China exceeding $50 billion last year, constituting more than 18 percent of Saudi Arabia’s total exports. Bilateral trade between the two economies is more than $80 billion. Saudi Arabia has also traditionally been China’s top oil supplier, providing about 17 percent of total Chinese oil imports as of last year. Saudi Aramco last week agreed to acquire a 10 percent stake in China’s oil refining giant Rongsheng Petrochemical for $3.6 billion, a deal that will significantly expand the state-owned energy giant’s refining presence in the country. The deal includes the supply of 480,000 barrels per day of crude oil to the Rongsheng-controlled Zhejiang Petroleum and Chemical Company for 20 years. Rongsheng owns a 51 percent equity interest in ZPC, which in turn owns and operates the largest integrated refining and chemicals complex in China, with a capacity to process 800,000 barrels per day of crude oil and produce 4.2 million metric tons of ethylene per year. It is quite remarkable how things have changed between the Kingdom and China. Aside from politics, there is a long-term strategic objective to achieve bilateral benefits in different fields. We at BMG Financial Group had a business encounter with the Chinese as well. During the Davos meetings in May 2022 — the only conference that took place in spring in Davos history — I met Abdullah Al-Swaha, the minister of communications and information technology. I informed the minister about our Chinese client, who wants to explore ways to do business in the country in the semiconductors space. He referred me to the president of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, Dr. Munir El-Desouki, who arranged a grand tour for me and members of the Chinese company of KACST’s impressive semiconductor facilities. Several follow-up meetings have taken place on the scope of cooperation between the Chinese company and KACST. A memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed in May. It is quite remarkable how things have changed between the Kingdom and China. Aside from politics, there is a long-term strategic objective to achieve bilateral benefits in different fields, including manufacturing, finance, healthcare, technology, and education. I now appreciate the famous old Arabic saying: Seek knowledge even if you have to go as far as China.. Basil M.K. Al-Ghalayini is the chairman and CEO of BMG Financial Group.

Formula One a game changer for the spectacular Bride of The Red Sea

It was another spectacular weekend for Jeddah city, the Bride of the Red Sea. As the Saudi Vision 2030 transformation plan aspires to grow household and tourist spending on entertainment and tourism through the creation of world-class attractions that are of the highest international standards, Jeddah was the destination for Formula One grand prix lovers. Thousands of spectators came from all over the world, putting Jeddah on the global motorsports map for the third time. My love for F1 races goes back to when I was working in London almost 30 years ago. Living in the UK allows you to follow the sport through extensive media coverage, especially since Britain has produced many champions over the years. Also, being in the UK, it was easy back then to attend the races at Silverstone, Monaco and other European venues. . At Jeddah this year, our host was Saudia airline at its hospitality lounge in the Paddock Club arena. The airline’s association with F1 racing goes back to the late 1970s, when it used to sponsor the Williams team. This investment proved a landmark in the team’s history, with the “Fly Saudia” branded team winning its first world championships in 1980. Saudi Aramco has also been a global F1 partner and it is in talks to develop and accelerate plans toward a power unit fueled by advanced sustainable fuels. Similar to football, F1 is not only a mass spectator sport but also a very profitable business.Similar to football, F1 is not only a mass spectator sport but also a very profitable business. Hosting a Formula One race boosts the economy of both the host city and country by stimulating consumer spending and creating new opportunities in the secondary and tertiary sectors. Hotels in Jeddah were fully booked for the weekend, while local food and cafe brand owners were overwhelmed by long queues throughout the three days. As a result of the 2022 season’s races, reports show that the Formula One Group achieved a revenue of $2.5 billion, which included race promotion fees (which made up 28.6 percent of the total), media rights (36.4 percent) and sponsorship (16.9 percent). In my opinion, the F1 grand prix races in Jeddah have been game changers for the sports and tourism sectors, especially for the young generation. On the business front, I have met long-time friends from the US, UK, Germany and Brazil, who have landed in Jeddah, flying their private jets to attend the race and hold side meetings with their Saudi contacts. Jeddah is not only the Bride of the Red Sea but also the fastest street circuit on the F1 calendar, attracting yacht owners watching the race from its spectacular marina. Basil M.K. Riyadh’s name is flying sky-high

Back in 2015, I visited my dear brother Yasir Al-Rumayyan to congratulate him on his new post as the Public Investment Fund governor. Back then, the fund’s team had less than 50 members working in one of the buildings inside Riyadh’s Digital City complex. With an unprecedented growth rate among leading sovereign wealth funds, the PIF now has more than 2,000 employees with a portfolio of five giga-projects and over 85 companies with about $600 billion in assets under management, excluding the values of the giga-projects until they commence commercial operations. The latest breakthrough by the Saudi sovereign fund was last week’s announcement by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of the launch of a new national airline, Riyadh Air. The airline will use a single hub based in Riyadh with the plan to acquire a fleet with one or two aircraft models. The creation of the airline came after comprehensive studies on how to cater for the future mobility of millions of residents, international tourists and transit passengers. The initial plan is for operations to begin in 2024. Riyadh Air will optimize the Kingdom’s new vision and its future business, cultural and natural attractions for business travelers and tourists around the world.Al-Rumayyan will be the chairman of the airline, while Tony Douglas will be the CEO. The latter’s career includes 40 years of experience in the aviation and transportation fields. The management team will include best-in-class professionals both locally and internationally. In terms of economic returns, the new airline is expected to add $20 billion to Saudi Arabia’s non-oil gross domestic product growth and create more than 200,000 direct and indirect jobs. King Salman International Airport will be the airline’s single hub. This new airport is expected to accommodate up to 185 million passengers and process 3.5 million tons of cargo by 2050 as part of the country’s vision to transform Riyadh to being among the top 10 city economies in the world and to support the growth of its population to 20 million people by 2030. The current national carrier, Saudia, has been operating around the globe, optimizing the Kingdom’s strategic location as a business hub and home to the two holy sites that serve millions of pilgrims as they perform Hajj and Umrah. On the sports scene, the Saudia brand has been on the fast track of Formula 1 since the late 1970s and it continued this legacy by sponsoring the F1 race in Jeddah this weekend. To complement that legacy, Riyadh Air will optimize the Kingdom’s new vision and its future business, cultural and natural attractions for business travelers and tourists around the world. In addition to the PIF’s newly created icons in Riyadh city, including King Salman Park, King Abdullah Financial District, the UNESCO-registered Diriyah Gate and the New Murabba, we now have its latest contribution, with the name of Riyadh flying sky-high globally.Basil M.K. SMEs: The key driver of the Saudi economy

During my high school years, I used to spend my evening hours at my father’s company: Al Ghalayini Fountains, a specialized construction company for the beautification of waterworks. Back then, there were only a handful of small and medium enterprises in the country and they did not have any guidance or support, but with my father’s patience and perseverance, he managed to keep his business afloat. Now, SMEs are considered the backbone of every economy, as they play a key role in generating employment opportunities and fostering economic empowerment for the youth. One of the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 is to make SMEs a key driver of the Kingdom’s economic development and enabler in achieving the vision and beyond. The government plans to raise the contribution of SMEs from the current 20 percent of gross domestic product to 35 percent by facilitating their access to funding and encouraging financial institutions to allocate up to 20 percent of overall loans to them from the current 5 percent. As a gesture of support, the country’s sovereign fund, the Public Investment Fund, has also supported SMEs by setting up a $1 billion fund that will provide them with access to capital. The “Fund of Funds,” as it is known, will invest in venture capital and private equity funds targeting SMEs. The most important support from the government was the establishment of the Small and Medium Enterprises General Authority, known as Monsha’at. Several years back, Monsha’at launched the Biban Forum, which became the most important tool for the country’s accelerated development in SMEs and entrepreneurship. Biban has contributed to the creation of a catalytic environment, in partnership with public and private sector stakeholders. Since its inception a few years back, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor report, Saudi Arabia’s ranking in the National Entrepreneurial Context Index has risen from 41st in 2018 to fourth place last year. This increase is in line with the country’s vision, which gives a prominent role to SME growth. The most important support from the government was the establishment of the Small and Medium Enterprises General Authority, known as Monsha’atBiban’s mandate is not only for local SMEs; it also receives participants from around the world and facilitates access to different services and initiatives that help SME owners and entrepreneurs promote business growth and embrace a culture of innovation. This allows entrepreneurs and business owners to develop the latest ideas, which in turn benefits the domestic and international economy while connecting them with investors and financing sources in the country and abroad. Monsha’at’s ambitious plans include enhancing the Kingdom’s position so that it becomes the first-choice destination for national and international entrepreneurs, and promoting communication between SME owners and entrepreneurs locally and internationally. Since one of our key competencies is advising and preparing companies to list publicly on the Saudi Parallel Market, Nomu, we at BMG Financial Group meet regularly with entrepreneurs who, after a positive financial performance, wish to list their startups on Nomu. These days, I am witnessing young entrepreneurs, supported by Monsha’at and its global forum Biban, who are taking calculated decisions and risks on the future of their SMEs in a speedy fashion. After waiting for more than three decades, I think it is about time to convince my sisters and brother to take our medium family enterprise, Al Ghalayini Fountains, public.Basil M.K. Government and private sector are in concert: The symphony has started

Since almost one-third of our clients are international companies, not to mention my network of contacts in the London financial market gained while living there for over 15 years, I am frequently asked: “Are you coping with all these announcements and developments?” My answer has been: “I am trying.” Following up his announcement about the Shareek program almost two years ago, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman last Wednesday attended the official launch of the first wave of the program with the presence of top Saudi listed companies, led by Saudi Aramco. Shareek, which means partner, outlined plans for $51 billion of investments by local companies under a government incentive program with the objective to accelerate a plan to diversify its economy away from oil. The program also helps eligible companies accelerate planned projects and identify new partnerships and investment opportunities with the Saudi government’s support.Twelve projects within the eight companies received funding after the signing of framework agreements. In addition to Saudi Aramco, other top companies include Saudi Telecom Company, Saudi Arabian Mining Company and ACWA Power. After receiving funding, STC will implement an EMC cable project, strengthening Saudi Arabia’s position as a MENA region digital hub and reliable route for data traffic. The Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden) will receive funds to accelerate its Phosphate 3 project in Wa’ad Al-Shamal. It is set to position the company as the third-largest global producer of phosphate fertilizers by 2029. This project hopes to enhance the Kingdom’s position in the world’s agricultural value chain, aiding global food security.ACWA Power, which is listed on the Saudi Tadawul with a global presence and portfolio, will receive funds to construct the world’s largest green hydrogen plant. This plant is being developed in partnership with Neom Green Hydrogen Company and Air Products Qudra. It ties in with Saudi Arabia’s vision to become a green energy leader and supports the Kingdom’s net zero ambitions. The $51 billion in funding is expected to be spent by these enrolled companies by 2030 to achieve over $124 billion in gross domestic product growth and create over 64,000 local jobs. For someone who hosted classical music concerts around the world featuring world-class orchestras under our BMG Foundation umbrella, I can vividly see and hear that Shareek enhances the harmony between the public and private sectors to produce the 2030 symphony. On weekly basis, I shuttle between Jeddah and Riyadh to keep track of official economic announcements, giga-project inaugurations, official delegations’ visits, business, and financial conferences, as well as following up with our Nomu market clients. I meant what I said to my friends: “I am trying.”Basil M.K. Al-Ghalayini is the chairman and CEO of BMG Financial Group.

The magic of Diriyah on Founding Day

As we celebrate the week-long festivities of the Saudi Founding Day, there is one word that keeps being repeated and has become the most common and focal name when describing the occasion. This word is “Diriyah.” According to history, Imam Mohammed bin Saud ruled Diriyah and managed to transform it from a city-state to a vast state. In February 1727, he assumed power in exceptional circumstances and overcame the challenges of weakness, division and disease in the region. Moving to the 1970s, during my childhood and without divulging my age, I visited Diriyah when its population did not exceed 10,000, with a few hundred visitors on the weekends. Not in my wildest dreams did I think that, decades later, I would be riding an electric car, made by Lucid, and taking off at the speed of 200 km per hour on the Formula E track before the official race. What a contrast! As the fifth giga-project under the Public Investment Fund mandate, the DGDA transformation of Diriyah will include three zones. DGDA 1, a UNESCO-certified site, is planned to be the largest cultural and heritage destination. DGDA 2 will include iconic districts like the Champs Elysees Avenue of Paris and Madison Avenue of New York, with world-class media and entertainment activities. DGDA 3 will have a huge residential complex with about 17,500 units available for anyone who wants to buy or rent, as well as 38 global brands of five-star hotels and Michelin-awarded restaurants. It is worth noting that the Hanifa valley will be adjacent to and surrounding these three zones. With an allocated budget of $63 billion, as part of the 2030 masterplan, the Diriyah Gate Development Authority aims to attract 25 to 30 million visitors annually to enjoy world-class sports, entertainment, educational and cultural activities, including music halls, galleries and museums that will offer visitors interactive and enjoyable experiences. Diriyah is not an ordinary city, but the ‘one and only’ destinationUnder the leadership of the DGDA chairman, Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, Jerry Inzerillo is running the daily business activities as chief executive officer. In a recent interview with a TV show called “Fi Al Soorah,” which means “In The Picture,” host Abdullah Al-Mudaifer asked Inzerillo: “Why is the CEO of DGDA not Saudi but an American with Italian roots?” With his humorous and social intelligence style, his response was: “Who says I am not a Saudi? I am a Bedouin from Brooklyn.” Not only has Inzerillo had a sterling career in the hospitality and entertainment arena, but he has also been studying Diriyah since 1989..Diriyah is not an ordinary city, but the “one and only” destination. It is a place that aims to achieve the highest degree of quality of life, offering all these world-class cultural and entertainment activities with a zero-carbon emission climate supported by thousands of trees that will be planted there. With its highly experienced leadership team, Diriyah inspires new generations of local and international entrepreneurs to participate in the development of this magical city. Imam Mohammed bin Saud would be very proud. Basil M.K. Al-Ghalayini is the chairman and CEO of BMG Financial Group.

2022 a turning point in the Saudi capital market

I received an invitation from my dear brother Khalid Al-Hussan, CEO of Saudi Tadawul Group, to attend this year’s edition of the Saudi Capital Market Forum, which took place in Riyadh last week. I must say, compared to its previous editions, it was unique in terms of content, speakers, topical diversity and the number of participants. The forum brought together a wide spectrum of participants, including government officials, opinion leaders, issuers and investors to explore key issues facing the industry and the evolution of global capital markets, as well as to present the efforts of Saudi companies in meeting global environmental, social and governance standards. Furthermore, digital innovations topics were discussed, especially fintech in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and open banking. The interview conducted by Matthew Martin, Bloomberg’s bureau chief for Saudi Arabia, with Mohammed El-Kuwaiz, chairman of the Capital Market Authority board, was an excellent kickoff to the forum, summarizing the record year of Saudi capital market achievements during 2022. In the post-COVID-19 era, family businesses have been looking for all types of funding, including using the public listing channel. That explains the record number of initial public offerings that took place in 2022. Over the past two years, we at BMG have experienced the highest number of visits by family businesses exploring the public listing route, mainly on the Nomu market. Since the start of this year, 22 companies have been approved for listing on the Tadawul and Nomu markets, while there are about 77 companies’ files under review, including one of our clients, which is in the plastic industrial business. The achievements of last year deserved the spectacular Saudi Capital Market ForumThe ESG topic and its relevance to Shariah-compliant guidelines were covered by two leading Shariah-compliant firms: SEDCO Capital and Alkhabeer Capital. That session was noticeably well presented and explained by the respective CEOs of these two firms.Another topic that was covered extensively was dual listings between the Saudi stock exchange and other exchanges in the region and internationally, including the Singapore Exchange, which signed a memorandum of understanding during the forum. It is worth mentioning that Americana Restaurants was the first dual listing between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi. The finale was showbiz, to say the least. The awards ceremony was performed in a Hollywood fashion. As 2022 was a record year, with 49 public offerings between the Tadawul All Share Index and Nomu, with funds amounting to more than $10 billion in value of offerings, the awards were expanded to new areas of specialization and businesses. Also, the ceremony included both financial institutions and issuers in collaboration with the CFA Society Saudi Arabia and the Middle East Investor Relations Association. Special congratulations to SNB Capital, which managed to sweep four awards for the first time. For someone who has been organizing and attending financial conferences and forums over many years, including the BMG Economic Forum every summer at the London Stock Exchange, I must say the achievements of 2022, which in my opinion were a turning point in the history of the Saudi capital market, deserved this spectacular forum.Basil M.K. From waste to wealth: Turning challenges into economic returns

Since the launch of the Vision 2030 masterplan, Saudi Arabia has been witnessing rapid industrialization and fast urbanization, which has resulted in increased levels of pollution and waste. Riyadh city alone, with a master plan to become a regional business hub for multinational companies, will add to waste management potential, especially with its target to host 20 million inhabitants by 2030. With all the rapid developments projects in the country, the waste-management sector will provide long-term promising opportunities for local and international investors.MISA, on the other hand, has been touring the world to promote foreign direct investment into the country. I had the honor to be participate in some of these delegations representing the private sector through our investment bank, BMG Financial Group. As a case in point, for the past three years BMG and MISA teams have been working closely together to prepare the entry of a leading technology-driven waste management company from Germany into the country.Last month, MISA and HTCycle signed a memorandum of understanding to explore investment opportunities in the development of the waste-management sector and the setting up of a regional office in Riyadh. HTCycle is a technology leader in the field of hydrothermal carbonization, which brings its sustainable recycling technology to the Kingdom. With its research and developments, HTCycle can process waste in an environmentally friendly way and benefit from the results of the hydrothermal carbonization process, including activated carbon, which is used in the water treatment industry. BMG was appointed by HTCycle as its investment banker for the Saudi operations’ capital-raising from strategic investors. Later this month, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, together with the Saudi National Center for Waste Management, are hosting the Waste 2 Wealth conference, a one-of-a-kind event that will bring together policymakers, investors, innovators and entrepreneurs to present and discuss the transformation in the country’s waste-management sector, global trends in technology, investment drivers and enablers, and other topics. In my opinion, with all the rapid developments projects in the country, the waste-management sector will provide long-term promising opportunities for local and international investors. The Waste 2 Wealth forum is another timely platform where policymakers and investors can compare notes to turn these challenges into economic returns.Basil M.K. Central bank digital currency coming to Saudi Arabia

The announcement by the Saudi Central Bank, SAMA, about the launching of its test lab for digital currency is a move in the right direction for the digitized economy. Saudi Arabia continues its journey toward Vision 2030 with the National Transformation Program. One of the key measures is a shift toward a digitized economy. While the focus is shifting globally to new and emerging blockchain technologies, which are integral to supporting and realizing digital economies around the world, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region are not far behind. As we are witnessing globally, the introduction and evolution of cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies have created further interest in cashless societies and digital currencies. Thus, governments and central banks worldwide are exploring the possibility of using government-backed digital currencies, which are known as CBDCs. If and when they are implemented, these currencies have the full faith and backing of the government that issued them. Central bank digital currencies are digital tokens, similar to cryptocurrency, issued by a central bank. They are pegged to the value of that country’s fiat currency. To elaborate, fiat money is government-issued currency that is not backed by a physical commodity like gold or silver. It is considered a form of legal tender that can be used to exchange goods and services. Traditionally, fiat money came in the form of banknotes and coins, but technology has allowed governments and financial institutions to supplement physical fiat money with a credit-based model in which balances and transactions are recorded digitally. Those who endorse CBDCs see their main goal as being to provide businesses and consumers with privacy, transferability, convenience, accessibility and financial security. CBDCs could also decrease the maintenance a complex financial system requires, reduce cross-border transaction costs, and provide those who currently use alternative money transfer methods with lower-cost options. On the other side, those who have critical views of CBDCs, like Urs Schwinger, chief information officer of IPI, claim that cryptocurrency itself was invented with its main advantage being giving individuals back full control over their money without any bank interference. CBDCs are just an improved method of classical online banking, far away from the vision of a truly decentralized and digital currency. Since its inception, SAMA has managed its affairs with wise and long-term decisions coupled with iron-fisted supervision. The decision to kick off a CBDC test lab was initiated under the leadership of former SAMA Gov. Fahad Al-Mubarak. Going forward, I am sure it will be put on the fast track, along with other digital currency initiatives, under the leadership of the newly appointed Gov. Ayman Al-Sayari.Basil M.K. Saudi Arabia shines as global investment darling at BMG Economic Forum

Investors and experts from across Saudi Arabia, the UK and Europe gathered at the BMG Economic Forum’s annual meeting at the London Stock Exchange on Tuesday to highlight key investment and cooperation opportunities with the Kingdom. The conference, part of BMG’s Annual Summer Retreat, shone a light on multiple topics for investors including geopolitics, dual listings, key growth sectors, small and medium enterprises, and the future of fintech.“We chose the London Stock Exchange to host our forum because it is the oldest exchange in the world, which will help to broaden our message and reach global investors to promote the promising inward investments into the Kingdom,” Basil Al-Ghalayini, CEO of BMG Financial Group, said in his opening remarks. The event sought to complement the BMG group’s objective of “creating unique relationships with its clients through collaboration and partnerships (and) educate the business community it serves beyond revenues and bottom lines,” Al-Ghalayini added. The annual gathering brings together government officials, decision-makers, and global investors. It is a platform to discuss and explore the latest investment opportunities in Saudi Arabia and guide international companies wishing to expand their presence in the Kingdom. “The Saudi government is having a clear investment agenda when it comes to real estate. It is very important to engage with the British investors and to increase the awareness about the potential of Saudi overall and the opportunities we have within the Saudi economy,” Mohammad Shahin, group CFO at Al-Shair Group. Among this year’s prominent speakers were Dr. Nabeel Koshak, CEO and board member of Saudi Venture Capital Company; Abdulaziz Al-Ghifaili, UK international office director for the Ministry of Investment, and Tom Attenborough, the head of International Development at the London Stock Exchange Group. The forum, titled “Investing for sustainable growth: The Saudi opportunity now and beyond” comes at a crucial moment for Saudi Arabia as it promotes the Kingdom’s 2030 Vision — with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman just announcing his designs for The Line, one of several mega-projects now underway as part of the country’s economic diversification plan. “The crown prince has a vision, and that is Vision 2030, to open up to the world, to tourists. This means the Kingdom is building a lot of hotels and resorts and (I’ve recently been) speaking to hundreds of restaurants which have been opening every month in Saudi Arabia,” Vittorio Rocchi, CEO at Sitaf Foods. “So for us, it is a great opportunity to grow our family business,” he added, emphasizing how strategic it has been for them to list with Saudi Arabia’s Nomu market. One of the panels, moderated by Arab News’ Tarek Ali Ahmad, the head of the newspaper’s Research and Studies Unit and its media editor, saw Cevdet Caner, CEO of Aggregate Holdings, and Mahfuz Rahman, partner of BMG Europe, discussing recent geopolitical developments affecting asset allocation models in Europe and around the world. “Supply chain, inflation and the Russia-Ukraine conflict have impacted markets and created volatility,” Rahman said during the panel. “But opportunities are there, they are just more sector oriented.” Caner, however, saw advantages from market downfalls, stating: “I think maybe I’m more bullish than bearish, but I think a lot of investors would dream of making an even bigger killing and wait for the markets to go down further.” The forum continued with Zahara Malik, CEO and co-founder of asset management company Grosvenor Capital, and Attenborough of the LSE, discussing the opportunity for dual listings of companies operating globally. Attenborough said the number of institutional investors in LSE’s listed shares, who also invest in Saudi Arabia, was “growing year by year.” However, these investors are still only 200 compared to the 3,800 institutional investors in London overall. Dual listings represent a “huge opportunity for companies to expand their international investor base” he said. https://youtu.be/FWqCHdOKj5ohttps://youtu.be/awt9EvSLn3khttps://youtu.be/rFg-TEs3PIEhttps://youtu.be/y_IwZ8aM-JU

East meets West: Classical Saudi concert kicks off BMG Economic Forum 2022

A wonderful evening of classical music at London’s iconic St. John’s Smith Square brought together sounds and melodies of Saudi Arabia from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on Monday. The event marked the opening of the annual economic forum presented by BMG Foundation. The event was part of a series of classical concerts to “inspire a wordless dialogue between East and West and to spawn a greater understanding of culture and tolerance between East and West.”The music, based on a series of traditional melodies from the Kingdom, was arranged to be performed by a Western classical orchestra.“It is very special to us what we have prepared. We did the composition of these pieces two year ago, but because of covid and travel restrictions we could only broadcast it virtually,” said the Chairman of BMG Foundation Basil Al-Ghalayini.“It is a beautiful evening, a very glamorous event with lots of interesting people,” Marie Claire, the event’s MC, told Arab News. “The music is amazing, we have amazing artists on stage (coming) from the US, Saudi Arabia and London, and everyone is enjoying it.”A rich program was conducted by the emerging young American musician, and chief conductor of the Nova Orchester Wien (NOW!), William Garfield Walker.Among the pieces, created by Diego Collatti and performed during the event, was “Anthem of Nations,” commissioned in 2020 during the Kingdom’s chairmanship of the G20 and “written as a metaphor for strength in union as well a tribute to member countries.”Al-Ghalayini added: “For me was such a joy to see it in person. We have decided to copyright the piece and we will have it (performed) every year.”BMG Foundation was set up in 1997 with the intent to “nurture common values that build bridges between East and West” through “annual events (that) aim to develop our youth’s engagement in sports and their appreciation of classical music and the arts.”Al-Ghalayini continued: “The idea is to introduce (these kinds) of classical music pieces to our young generation. We work together with the Saudi Embassy and (it) was great to see so many students attending the event tonight.“Music is the language of peace, (the) language of civilization.”The evening continued with Johan Sebastian Bach’s “Piano Concerto in F Minor BWV 1056” performed by Syrian-British pianist Riyad Nicolas, and “Hymn,” by American composer Charles Ives, a piece known as one of the great masterpieces of string orchestral literature. The concert ended with Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for String,” conducted by Walker.“It was really special experience. It was exciting because it was something that wasn’t the same thing over and over again,” Walker said.

BMG: Parallel Market Is a Huge Opportunity For Family Business

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMojszXpF9UThe CEO of BMG Financial Group Basil AlGhalayini said, in an interview with “Al Arabiya News” , that the parallel market is crucial for family businesses as it accommodates these firms and protect their equity values from dropping .AlGhalayini added that the Saudi Stock Exchange “Tadawul” has carried out workshop sessions for the families who are listing their companies on the parallel market, however the greater challenge is the governance of these companies.AL Ghalayini pointed out that the difficulties facing the corporate governance of these family businesses is because these companies are used to following legal and accounting regulations that allows the family to take decisions on their own, while the governance states that the management must be independent of ownership. Moreover, he stressed that Nomu-Parallel Market will help the listed companies to promote the principles of corporate governance.
